What is the latest on card imaging

Tue May 25, 2021 6:39 pm

Last time I imaged a card was back in 2017-2018.

think i used Win32 and or pishrink, dc3dd, truncating the image etc etc

I see mention now of a built in SD card copier . Can't access that as yet..the little Pi2 I have been given is still doing its update.

So thought i'd do a bit of digging and ask the question .

SD card Copier..or is the old dd pishinch method still in use ...or old hat ...?

I use Win32 Disk Imager - works fine, but does not understand filesystems, so it creates full 32 GB images of a 32 GB card. But harddisk space is cheap...

Ah yes, your comment about disk space ..was actually one that I meant to put on the initial post

Always found that a big issue with Win32.

That is what actually sparked my question. Did not want to ahve lods of 16-32gb image files kicking about that only had about 3gb data. That is why I started using dd3cd and pishrink, truncating the files..all a bit of a faff

image-backup will create an image file of your running system that is only as large as the actual space used by the filesystem. Upon restoring the image file, it will auto-expand to use all available space.

You may also want to have a look at USBImager, which works on most operating systems, it all depends on what you'd prefer ;)

Had success with image-backup last night
Created from 8Gb running system
Burnt back to another card of smaller size, and rebooted with new card, and all worked.
Just off out for a couple of hours on the bike (cycle)..., no Lycra !

Been sat in front of 4 screens for about 4 solid days... need to get out !
