Re: Debian Jessie with PIXEL desktop i386 for PC and Mac

Sat Jun 24, 2017 2:29 pm

I try to boot the x86 image (2017-06-22-rpd-x86-jessie.iso from https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/a-rasp ... ing-tools/ ) on an ASUS Eee PC 900, but I get:
“Failed to load ldlinux.c32
Boot failed: press a key to retry…”
Pressing key leads to same fail.

I burned using Etcher and it verified OK. I can boot other Linux (Quirky) from USB.

I get the same error on a Lenovo 3000 N200.

As I said, I cannot get 2017-06-22-rpd-x86-jessie.iso to work on my old PCs (and have not tried it on newer), but I could get the older 2016-12-13-pixel-x86-jessie.iso from https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/pixel-pc-mac/ to work. Then I dist-upgraded that and installed Scratch 2 and Thonny and these also work. See this picture https://i.cubeupload.com/fP3ImN.png from Eee PC 900 (2008).

This worked for a while, but now I end up with a black screen with a slowly blinking cursor in the top left corner. I think this might be related to that I used raspi-config to set to boot into Desktop Autologin and not wait for network, even though it was like this before. I downloaded raspi-config using git clone https://github.com/RPi-Distro/raspi-config. I needed raspi-config to change keyboard into Swedish and do other localization, and this worked. I also switched on ssh, but I can't log in since I get Permission denied (publickey). Is there any way to fix the black screen without reinstalling everything.

I would also like to get the newest iso-image to work since it takes a long time to dist-upgrade since December 2016.

Edit: I found out what was wrong: The downloaded iso-file was corrupt on my computer. Now, I downloaded it using the bittorrent-protocol and then it worked.

Edit 2: raspi-config is included in the new iso.

Edit 3: It was possible to fix the problem with ssh, see viewtopic.php?p=1162259#p1162259

Great work on the distro! Works wonderfully, especially once I got the Wi-Fi drivers sorted out for my hardware.
However, I recently ran apt-get autoremove to free some (limited) disk space, and this apparently removed all of the PIXEL desktop backgrounds, as well as the custom window header bar formats. The desktop background is now white, and the standard (GNOME? Other desktop?) bars run across the top of all windows. How can I reinstall the PIXEL-specific visuals?

Thanks for any help.

Had you just updated as if it's mirroring the Raspian version all the file names look to have changed for the customisations and these files.
(Aka the same files are now redundant on raspbian)

Try a dist-upgrade again?

Yes, this distribution of Debian Jessie with PIXEL desktop for i386 comes pretty close to Raspbian PIXEL desktop for the RPi. I am amazed and delighted by this installation.

Today I downloaded the iso image and installed it as a virtual machine without a hitch using VMware Fusion for Mac.

My experience has nothing of value for those who choose to install on actual hardware, but I'm sure there are a few who also use VMware for purposes of testing.

In VMware:
for type of virtual machine I chose "Debian 8.x", and the installer option for "Graphical Install" and "yes" for the suggested partitioning scheme and "yes" for single OS for GRUB.

However, after the install, I don't see the familiar "config.txt" in the boot directory. Instead, I see "config-3.16.0-4-586" and "config-3.16.0-4-686-pae".

For my purpose, I would like to change the display size. In Terminal, the command, "xrandr --output Virtual1 --mode 1440×900" does this for me while logged in. Can someone suggest a method for configuring display size at boot?

what?
Raspbian x86 ?!

oops , how could i miss the fact, that there is an Raspbian x86 version available for that long time?!

thank you for that Raspbian x86 iso image !!!

but now, i just added that Raspbian x86 iso to my RPi-PXE-Server project.
now i can boot my PC just into Raspbian x86 via PXE-boot.

i don't have a RPi3 to test, and a RPi2B (my most recent RPi i have) is not able to network-boot like a RPi3 (as long as i know).

in theory, it depends on the PXE-Service id, the RPi3 will request.
then you can a custom section entry for RPi3 only in the "/etc/dnsmasq.d/pxeboot" file.
currently there are only sections for

Code: Select all

pxe-service=x86PC, \"PXE Boot Menu (BIOS 00:00)\", $DST_PXE_BIOS/pxelinux
pxe-service=6, \"PXE Boot Menu (UEFI 00:06)\", $DST_PXE_EFI32/syslinux
pxe-service=x86-64_EFI, \"PXE Boot Menu (UEFI 00:07)\", $DST_PXE_EFI64/syslinux
pxe-service=9, \"PXE Boot Menu (UEFI 00:09)\", $DST_PXE_EFI64/syslinux
or it is possible to switch to an RPi3 path, when the MAC address/or IP address maches

EDIT: ok, found the document for RPi3's Network booting.

You have mis-understood the respose, he was queerying if he can use Debian Jessie x86-32 with Pixel Desktop as a TFTP Server and then Network Boot his Raspberry Pi 3 B and point it towards the TFTP Server which hosts the Raspbian Jessie OS.

the pi3 would be served ARM debian (raspbian) from same TFTP server.
x86 clients served full x86 OS via PXE menu.

raspbian-x86.iso # a Raspbian (Raspberry Pi environment) version for x86

When booting up the latest x86-32 it now reads:

Welcome to the Raspberry Pi Desktop
Powered by Debian

So it would appear that they have dropped the Pixel name and now just call it the Raspberry Pi Desktop

I have bit the bullet and installed on my old Acer Aspire 5332 Laptop which has a 40GB SSD HDD and 4GB Memory.

I have previously preferred Lubuntu over Debian / LXDE but this has changed my mind, hats off to RPF for this update :D

Thanks kevinthefixer, I am not very script-wise, but I put the command:

Code: Select all

xrandr --output Virtual1 --mode 1440x900
into my user's .bashrc script. This correctly changes the display size when I launch Terminal which is helpful for the virtual machine of Debian Jessie x86 for PC & Mac (using VMware for Mac).

Then, I got haughty and thought I could do the same in /"etc/rc.local". It does not work that way and I suspect maybe it shouldn't. I was amused by the existing commented line which says, "# By default this script does nothing."

But wait,
I found another "rc.local" in the "init.d" directory, so I tried there too -- no effect.

Then, I started looking at simple examples of Startup scripts as well as the one named "skeleton" in the "/etc/init.d" directory. Alas, I do not fully understand all the elements and requirements of their functions (literal and figurative). Therefore, Startup Scripts remain an area of future study for me.

Thanks for this hint though. It is an interesting topic of investigation.

Thank you ShiftPlusOne,

I like this command which evokes a GUI window, but in my virtual machine of Debian Jessie x86, it only showed one option for display size which was the size currently in use. I tried to learn more about it by referring to the lxrandr "man" page. There are no control options listed for it in its man page.

At a later time, after I ran update and dist-upgrade, the "lxrandr" command now lists 18 different display size options.

Thanks!

When tried the 1st version of Debian Jessie + Pixel I was a bit disappointed and forgot all about it.
When this recent version came around, again, I tried it in my old Eee 1000HE. And now it was completely different. Everything worked fine! Wireless, Wired, keyboard. Well almost because not all the Eee "Fn" keys do not, but some do. I began to consider a dual boot Raspbian and my tired Win XP so that it could replace it, but the fact that I was not still capable of controlling the internal and external displays ant its resolution was deterring me.
After some search, I was capable of doing it in the terminal using "xrandr". But then I found in a post above by ShiftPlusOne that "lxrandr" can be used to open a graphical interface to do that .
And that does it. Now, everything (important) works fine with my Asus Eee 1000HE and Debian Jessie with PIXEL!
By the way: The battery monitor icon seems to be is a little bit awkward!
Thank you so much for Raspberry Pi, the Zero, and now Debian with Pixel.

what is the official way to find the "Raspberry Pi Desktop for x86" iso image?

i thought it will be found unter "Downloads" like the other images for the RPi itself, with a short description and so on, but it is not.
i only found those iso images or even its existence of that kind of iso only in the blog by coincedence.
but the blog is going down very quickly, when new blogs comming in.
even that the name and url was changed from "http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/pixel_x86/images/..." to "http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/rpd_x86/images/...". if sombody new the pixel_x86 link, but missed the blog for the rpd_x86, then maybe that person still is on pixel_x86.

so, is there an official download page for those iso images?

There isn't one, they did post in the comments on the latest blog for it, that they are looking at adding a separate page for x86 downloads.

Return to “Raspberry Pi Desktop for PC and Mac”
