usb camera vs pi camera

Wed Jul 19, 2017 5:30 pm

Hi,

Does this:

offer best quality during night vision? Can anyone enumerated trade-offs between standard raspberry camera module and the previous?

Thanks

You can get a V2 Pi NoIR camera with better resolution for 24£:

Or a V1 Pi NoIR camera with same resolution/sensor for 11$:

Since both use the native MIPI camera interface I would expect both to outperform the USB camera performancewise.

Hermann.

I use the above V1 camera a lot and really like it, it makes nice frames in 640x480 @90fps video with only 1ms shutter time (using a 3W infrared LED):

Or photos in darkness (again with 3W infrared LED):

Yes, agree with you.
In terms of performance MIPI outperformances since is directly linked to gpu. However, I have a waveshare ir cut setup and I've notice that the night vision range is not that good. 3/4 meters.

to use IR camera it is best to use a separate IR illumination

It would be great if some users posted pictures of their current setup with night vision distance.
Waveshare IR CUt with 2 IR leds 3W. around 2.5 meters high and 3 meters night vision distance. I think it's a low distance

Having tried a few different external IR lights for outside, I like these. Usually around $10 canadian funds, shipped from China, bought on ebay. They can be improved before installing by using a small amount of silicone around where the power wire is. One will light a small driveway ~enough~ to get a good video of activity in said driveway. They are 850nm wavelength and when on, humans can see a red glow from the light but the area is not lit to our eye.

You can find several other choices on ebay with more IR LEDs but be very careful....some sellers are labelling the lights as IR when they are not. Dealing with returns to china is impossible.

On left is a noir V2 cam and on right is a waveshare 5mp. Both use the same light source as above.

My point is, from your setup, the amount of light you inject vs a netgear arlo pro that has 12led it seems that at low light usb cameras from ELP, for instance, perform better. (I'm not comparing prices here)

I'm betting that the 4 larger IR LED in that little lamp puts out more usable light than the 12 tiny ones in that link you posted in the original post of this thread.

My neighbor has a LED light in his back yard that has a hundred of those little LEDs in it. It might light up 5' in front of it... pretty much useless outside. But they sell a ton of them because people think that more might be better.

THIS here would be better but I'm not inclined to spend $36 on one yet-

I'm no expert on this but from what I've seen around it depends on the sensor area or something like that.
