Constant crash of Pi 400

Sat Aug 13, 2022 9:33 pm

So no matter how many times I reload the OS, no matter what chip I use, after a few minutes the Pi freezes and I get garbage on the screen.

More often than not, that means I'm reloading the card. It's useless like this.

Is this a hardware problem? I've even tried two different power supplies.

You need to provide a lot more detail. Which OS? What chip are you referring to? What power supply are you using? What happens when it ‘crashes’? What is connected to your Pi400?

Sorry, more details:

Raspberry Pi OS 32 bit
Raspberry Pi official USB-C power supply. Have also tried it with the Apple USB-C power adapter.
Only connected peripherals are monitor and mouse
I've tried the included 16GB chip and a 64GB SanDisk Ultra.

When it crashes, the screen gets some garbage on it. If I remove the power cord, wait, then reapply power, USUALLY the power light will flash eight times, pause, then keep the sequence. Nothing ever appears on the monitor when this happens.

Sometimes it will not wipe the card on crash. Reboot, start the OS, load up a browser (for example, anything) and after a few minutes it will crash also. The next reboot WILL be the eight flashes on the power light.

I suspect you're going to tell me bad chip? Both?

8 flashes means the ram is bad
the SD card isnt the problem

You would have to contact the seller you purchased it from (warranty returns and exchanges are handled by the authorized reseller, not directly by RPT or the foundation).

Hopefully you bought it from an authorized reseller (if you didn't, well...).
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups, and where is that annoying music coming from?

Doesn't matter who it was bought from - the contract of sale is with whoever you buy it from. The faulty item needs to be returned to where it was bought.

I've had this same issue on my 400 unit that I ordered almost a year ago, so of course now I can't return it. Does the freezing look anything like the image I've posted? Image. I've tested two different SD cards (BOTH Raspberry Pi OS and Manjaro ARM, Manjaro seems very less likely to freeze) and two official Raspberry Pi Power supplies. The new power supply I got seems more prone to this sort of freezing than the first one! Really frustrating that this is still a constant issue with Raspberry Pi 400 units. Seems almost unheard of on the regular 4B versions.

Looking at that screenshot, it appears unrelated to the OP's problem, My first thought in your case would be to check the HDMI cable.

+1
@CoWinkKeyDinkInc what happens if you boot without a uSD card (or any other bootable device) ? (IE. what does the booloader diagnostic screen look like?)
Trev.
Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P3B+, P4B's & P400. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm
