RPI-Installer - Ubuntu 22.04 Image Fails First Boot?

Wed Aug 10, 2022 3:29 pm

Hi,

I've got an RPI 3 B+ I am flashing with the rpi-installer.

I have tried both the arm64 and armhf images for 22.04 LTS server.

Both boot directly into emergency mode, and I can't get out.

As a test I used 20.04 LTS 64-bit, and that one boots fine.

Is this an RPI-installer issue or something with the image supplied by Canonical?

Well, they recommend using the Pi Imager, so I don't think the imager is the issue. Did you try a different SD card to rule out the one you have is not the problem? That's probably the easiest test you can do.

As for help with ubuntu botting on a Pi or not, you're probably better off asking those questions in the ubuntu forums since they're the ones that know those images inside and out. Not that you won't get help here, but you'll probably get help for ubuntu directly from them.

I haven't tried a different SD card... I don't actually have one to try atm, but like I said, the older version of Ubuntu works.

I also don't see any other way of getting Ubuntu on a PI other than the rpi imager, and they no longer provide a stand alone RPI image for use with balenaEtcher or some such.

Well that appears to be same image rpi-installer downloads... lets see if I can't get it flashed some other way.

I'll place my bet on "the imager is not the problem"

Let us know what happens.

Checked the SHA256 on the image. It was good.

Flashed with balenaEtcher and it also failed first boot. Off to the Ubuntu forums, I guess.

I'm using an SD card now. I think the PI 3 B+ doesn't boot from USB at all without some modifications.

I'm wondering if 22.04 is simply not certified for anything under the PI 4, despite what it says. I need to get my hands on a 4.

are you using an adapter to write to the sd?
i've read some adapters are bad. do you have a different.

I am, but Raspbian and Manjaro both work when flashing with said adapter.

Oh, and a coworker provided me with an RPI 4, and none of the Ubuntu images work on the 4, even 20.04.

I'm completely out of ideas now. Flashed SD card on linux. The image looks fine. I can see its contents no problem.

Try to use in in an RPI, and it never works. I've got 2 or 3 different PIs here and none of them work.

I think that pretty much points to an issue with the image being installed and not the Pis themselves.

The people (Raspberry Pi) who make these forums available to support their products have their own Raspberry Pi Operating System. Presumably that was what you tested when you said that 'Raspbian' booted correctly.

If you don't want to use that supported Operating System - and that is your right to choose - perhaps you should be seeking advice from the developers/maintainers of your 3rd-party alternative?

As a test, using my Windows 10 PC, I used Raspberry Pi Imager v1.7.2 to write Ubuntu Desktop 22.04.1 LTS (64-bit desktop for pi4 models with 2Gb+) onto a spare 32GB microSD card (Samsung EVO) and then booted a pi4 (2GB) from it.
It worked perfectly, first time.
So something must be different to OP - what?

he's trying to do the server version, not desktop.
perhaps he's just not waiting long enough, ubuntu has the slowest installer/boot i've ever seen.

If you would take a moment to read the sentence of the opening post which contains the words "emergency mode" you might reconsider what you wrote.

And the OP said “ none of the Ubuntu images work on the 4, even 20.04” - the desktop does, as per the test.
Later, I will test server.

I was able to successfully install Ubuntu 22.04 LTS desktop 64 bit and server 64 bit on a Pi 400, both tests booting from an USB SSD.

To clarify, I'm booting from a Class 10 microSD card.

There seems to be an error while booting up the PI4 with the armhf image before booting to emergency mode.

[TIMEOUT] /dev/disk/by-label/system-boot

Followed by a handful of DEPENDENCY failures.

Seems like the issue causing the emergency mode, but how is this happening on a fresh flash?

Looking at the image in linux:

/writable/etc/fstab contains the following:

Code: Select all

LABEL=writable / ext4 discard,errors=remount-ro 0 1
LABEL=system-boot /boot/firmware vfat defaults 0 1
/writable/boot/firmware/cmdline.txt contains the following:

Code: Select all

net.ifnames=0 dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0 console=ttyAMA0,115200 console=tty1 root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 rootfstype=ext4 elevator=deadline rootwait
If I try to mount -a in emergency mode, it says Cannot find LABEL=system-boot.

The arm64 image produces the following error and hangs immediately at power on:

Code: Select all

[3.811677] raspberrypi-clk soc:firmware:clocks: Failed to change fw-clk-arm frequency: -110

The ubuntu forum has not been very helpful either.
