Nice set!

When did you order? Did you receive a shipping info with tracking details?
My credit card got billed on 29th Aug but no shipping info/delivery yet (but as some of you may know I'm in Germany and not UK).

Can't wait to get my dirty hands on them

My shipment still not has happened! Latest info is "We are planning on shipping your pi-top over the next few days."
So let's wait and figure out how long 'next few days' actually is ....

Mine hasn't shipped yet either. Ordered on 1st August. Going to give them until the end of the week before chasing.

I ordered one on the 29th in the afternoon. DHL email says it'll arrive tomorrow. pi-top order page hasn't updated yet and only says order confirmed.

And it's here. Arrived about 10 minutes ago via DHL. FYI: no updates on the PiTop website just two emails from DHL (one yesterday to say it had shipped, another this morning to say it was due for delivery).

Re: pi-top [3] on sale

Got my pi-top.

The pi-top box was damaged because of the poor packing by the fulfillment company. It was put into a massive box with only 2 sheets of foam as ineffective padding.

The keyboard layout is US as I suspected.

The preapplied thermal pad is already the thin one needed for a 3B+.

It is nice they give you 2 spares each of the thin + thick thermal pads and a small bag with spare screws.

If you want stock Raspberry Pi OS (32-bit only) then ignore their "Using pi-top Hardware with Raspberry Pi OS (formerly Raspbian)" instructions as that is for Buster.

What you actually need to do is:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install pi-top-os-apt-source
sudo apt update
sudo apt install --no-install-recommends pi-topd pt-firmware-updater
Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit isn't supported. Most of their packages are Python based so any architecture but it does pull in some binary packages from their repo as well which are armhf only. It probably could be worked around but I've not tried. I was going to install 64-bit for consistency but 32-bit will be fine especially on a 3B+.

So the question is: what will not work with a stock 64bit OS?

Keyboard and Touchpad should be an USB device (that's what one of the USBs is used for). Battery is a SMB device (I2C) so there is possibility that a kernel driver can be used, or simply ommit that.

Mine were shipped and are in transit.

P.s. There is only a US keyboard available!

https://github.com/pi-top/pi-topd/blob/ ... re-info.md has the full list of what pi-topd does. The most important parts are notifying the hub board that you've shutdown so it can cut power and showing battery status. The lid close sensor needs pi-topd as well.

There is a lxplug-ptbatt in the regular repo that claims to show pi-top battery status but I've not tried it. lxplug-ptbatt is already installed. It connects to pi-topd to show the battery status on the taskbar. It does nothing by itself.

(watching this thread with interest, even tho I have a pi-top [4] diy. It seems happy running the 64-bit desktop, though the nice little OLED and buttons don't work)

You need the pt-miniscreen package for those. https://github.com/pi-top/pi-top-4-Miniscreen is the repo so you may be able to manually install it.

Thanks - that process hoovers up almost an entire core, so I'd much rather not have it, or make it run at a sensible priority

 shipment stuck in German custom due to incorrect shipping documents .. DHL Express can't inform new delivery data yet (originally scheduled for today)

BTW: first tests with https://www.waveshare.com/product/raspb ... acce-a.htm and 20cm HDMI FFC were not successful. Note the green pixels (interferences) from the detail picture.
As the stock 5cm FFC's were fine - but to short to be used in the Pitop 3 - I started sourcing 10cm cables (https://eckstein-shop.de/DIYHDMICablePa ... 2FLaptopEN). Let's keep fingers crossed they will do the trick.

20cm FFC for USB were o.k., but have 10cm on hands as well. So decision will be taken once the 10cm HDMI FFC arrived.
IMG_20220811_125319.jpg
Test setup.
Possible root cause can also be active DPI display (interference with the HDMI routing on the PCB). Yes, load from additional HDMI cable also needs to be considered. situation did not change when swapping to a 10cm high quality HDMI cable

detail shot - notice green pixels resulting from interference/crosstalk on the FFC. Possible root cause is insufficient shielding (there is something added to the FFC but have no idea what it is)

As suspected the CM4toPi3 Adapter board won't quite go flat in the laptops Pi3 location because of the CM4 below.

Now do I dremel out a CM4 sized hole?

can the USB FFC be removed? If not your Dremel will not solve the issue.

Mine are still with DHL Express (stucked @ customs for quite a week) and maybe will show up tomorrow.

Tested with a 10cm FFC (as already mentioned here posting.php?mode=reply&t=338076#pr2028597) and result was good when using a different FHD timing (that 5.9in monitor has two). Questionmark is the timing used by the pitop's scaler chip, if that will work.

How many headroom does it have (bridge PCB mounted to underside of keyboard)? A small spacer (underneath the waveshare board and the piTop 2.0 hub) might do the trick (edit: a DIN 934 M3 nut is 2.4mm).
Can you do me a favor and measure the height of the Pi3 mounting studs?
The other waveshare board has the M.2 socket underneath which is around 3mm high.
IMG_20220816_142301.jpg
Will also have to figure out which cooler can be fitted. I have three different versions (2x passive and 1x active (not pictured)) which all differ in height.

I think the USB flexible cable is glued in.

Pi3 mounts are 2.5mm high.

Damn and damn! no bueno (as the USB interface is in the wrong position for this board ). Let's see ... There is still hope.

that's for sure too low for 5.078mm (the CM4 is 4.7mm deep, but when connected the height will be 5.078mm).

Will your screw/nut combi (used for holding the CM4 in place) add additional height?

Honestly, if the Pi3B / CM4 works from a hardware perspective, I think the most elegant solution may be to cut a CM4 size hole in the base (as mentioned above) of the pi-top and then 3D Print a bottom plate to cover the hole (with the appropriate space for some heat dissipation) and using the existing mounting holes as an attachment point. Simple/rudimentary example below (once I get my pi-top and CM4 adapter I could can put real dimensions/etc together). From a heat dissipation perspective, could we use something akin to the pi 400 (simple metal plate)?

There is the USB FPC in that area. Cutting a hole without removing the FPC is not possible.
Don't think that any cover plate would be required in case of doing so. Simply use an heatsink as cover.
