Pi 4B HDMI display problems

Wed Nov 30, 2022 10:49 am

The first problem was that I had to disable the screen blanking feature because the display couldn't wake up after the screen was blanked. I always had to reboot.
The problem then though seems to be be when left for a while, if I turn the display off or it's left off overnight but the pi is still on. Then when I turn the display on again it's not possible to get the display back showing the OS. I can still SSH remotely but no display.

So I installed xscreensaver and this has helped. Now I left it overnight and turned the monitor on and xscreensaver is showing and I can wake the display of the OS (it goes on and off a bit but does stabilise) So it looks like a power management bug? The video out not starting properly or something after going to sleep....

The other problem so far was hdmi out when booting. I used the pi in an art installation last weekend as the media player, was working at home, then when I set it up on site with the projector the display kept switching off showing "no display" after the boot splash screen, tried multiple times, different cables, came home to try different settings and turned off the splash screen etc, no change. Eventually I did get it to work, pressing the bluetooth keyboard many times whilst it was booting and the display did remain on, but I was nearly giving up by this stage.
But this seems quite common for me when booting, the display doesn't always come on, it seems very fussy with the monitor connected.

I've worked with hdmi for many years but have never had these kinds of HDMI quality issues.

This is my second pi after the last one died due to a hardware fault but it also it also had the display not waking problem, it seems it must be OS related. Using the latest Bullseye build.

It's not the cables because I use pro 4K cables and have tried several and they work perfectly with everything else I own.

Ok I tried that, but unfortunately it added a new problem in that the resolution of the display after booting was very low and I could no longer select higher resoltution to match the monitor res, it went up to around 1300 for width in the config menu with that line added. After removing that line I can select the higher resolutions again. My current monitor is a DELL 1920x1200 which is not the most common resolution but it does work with the Pi.

Firstly confirm what firmware/kernel you are running. And some display debug.
Do this without any custom settings in config.txt (like the force_hotplug one).

Code: Select all

vcgencmd version
uname -a
sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/1/hdmi0_regs | grep HOTPLUG
sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/1/hdmi1_regs | grep HOTPLUG
wc /sys/devices/platform/gpu/drm/card?/card?-HDMI-A-1/edid
wc /sys/devices/platform/gpu/drm/card?/card?-HDMI-A-2/edid
# if these aren't installed run sudo apt install kms++-utils
kmsprint
kmsprint -m

Try:

Code: Select all

sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/hdmi0_regs | grep HOTPLUG
sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/hdmi1_regs | grep HOTPLUG
Assuming this returns 1 (HDMI_HOTPLUG = 0x00000001) and 0 (HDMI_HOTPLUG = 0x00000000),
then all looks sensible.

The next thing to do would be to get it into the bad (no display) state, and report output of those commands again, and also output of dmesg.

Yes, it got those outputs you posted when I used:
sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/hdmi1_regs | grep HOTPLUG

Thanks, ok so i'll try those commands again next time I can't wake up the display and post those results...

yours is probably like mine, you need to tell it the default size.

Code: Select all

video=HDMI-A-1:1920x1200M@59.95D vc4.force_hotplug=3
mine for instance it seems like it can't tell which is the default from the supported choices.

Generally I don't have a default resolution size because I'm using it with different monitors and projectors, so will it make sense to use this method in my case?

So far the display is waking up ok I think because the xscreensaver has disabled the screen blanking application, the tab for that is now greyed out. So even if I disable the xscreensaver from operating, it's still not switching off the display if left for a while. I think this indicates that the screen blanking app must have some bugs, so even if you turn that tab off it's still affecting the HDMI and still turns off the monitor. I will leave it overnight to test again. I'm also having better luck when switching between different displays so far with the blanking disabled by the new app.

Hopefully this is also the cause of the other hdmi issue, but will find out if I still have problems with it.... :)

no don't do that if your using multiple screens.

if it was me i would disable the screen blanking in menu -> preferences -> raspi config, display tab (remove xscreensaver)
and
use the fkms driver that uses the old method to detect screens.

kms is the recommended, so if you can get that to work it would be better.
but if your using different screens, fkms might be the better driver.

But the main issue for me is that if I use the screen blanking in the preferences menu it doesn't work and is causing the display to not wake up afterwards, even if I disable it in the preferences it's still causing the display to sleep if left for a while and not wake up.

So far xscreensaver is working as expected and not causing any issues so I'm keeping with that for now. It looks like the default screen blanking driver has bugs.

Once you are happy display is working fine with xscreensaver, it would be useful to switch to screen blanking and confirm it still fails and capture debug info.

Ok I will uninstall xscreensaver and see if I can repeat the bug for debug info

Well so far it's been working well since going back to the default blanking, which is good news but puzzling. I'm not complaining though :)
I have been updating since then so maybe that's helped or renabling afer disabling the driver may have fixed it, but I will keep an eye on it.
I've noticed this morning that the overscan wasn't working and I had to reboot to get that working properly.
But the hdmi has been working much more reliably so far, fingers crossed it will continue :)

Ok I spoke to soon, the bug has returned, screen not waking up and the display now keeps trying to wake up but goes back to blank screen.

edit: But I have found the cause I think, it's something to do with an attached usb device which is attached to the pi with usb hub, if I detach the hub the screen can wake up. I think it could be the usb audio card but will troubleshoot some more....

So I thought I had found a workaround for the bug by removing the usb hub but this hasn't worked this morning. On a fresh boot the display has gone off and can't be woken up. The dmesg command reveals some errors below, maybe it is a power management bug as I originally assumed?

Re: Pi 4B HDMI display problems

Sun Dec 04, 2022 1:38 pm

When I booted this morning by turning on the power, the display was physically switched off, then I turned it on again later but the display doesn't turn on...I think this could be a useful thing to know.

This is the result of dmesg when the display comes on as normal to compare with above (could be useful)
although the display does keep flashing to a black screen for a while, but does stabilise usually.

Yeah same again this morning. Looks like if I start the pi with a monitor disconnected or switched off then you can't wake the display afterwards. If you boot with it on then it works.

got these errors when using dmesg

Code: Select all

[ 19.687815] hdmi-audio-codec hdmi-audio-codec.1.auto: ASoC: error at snd_soc_dai_startup on i2s-hifi: -19
[   19.687844]  MAI: soc_pcm_open() failed (-19)
This is normal and harmless.

Code: Select all

[ 124.273942] v3d fec00000.v3d: MMU error from client CLE (4) at 0xaae1000, pte invalid
Also normal and harmless.

Code: Select all

[42283.089389] Bluetooth: Unexpected continuation frame (len 0)
[42283.106864] Bluetooth: Unexpected continuation frame (len 0)
I don't usually use bluetooth, so not familiar with these - but unlikely to be related to screen blanking issues.

When I booted this morning by turning on the power, the display was physically switched off, then I turned it on again later but the display doesn't turn on...I think this could be a useful thing to know.
Yes - pi doesn't currently support hotplug of displays (e.g. disconnecting and reconnecting after pi is booted)*.

Basically when desktop starts up, it needs to know the resolution and refresh rate of display.
This is achieved by reading the edid (which can only be done if monitor is asserting hotplug).
This should be possible, even on a (connected) powered down monitor, as the edid circuitry is powered by 5V line provided by the source (pi).
But this behaviour is not consistent across all displays, and it sounds like yours doesn't.

The simple solution is to ensure monitor is powered on first.
More complicated solution is to capture the edid to a file, and enable that in cmdline.txt (but you would need to remove that if you want to connect a different monitor).
A future solution is to wait for RPiOS updates. I believe this should be supported in the future under wayland.

(*) It works somewhat when mutter is enabled (e.g. on Pi4 with 2GB or more), although audio needs to be manually restarted.

Ok I will uninstall xscreensaver and see if I can repeat the bug for debug info
I've seen you post dmesg, but not the other debug from here after the display being lost.

Return to “Troubleshooting”
