Raspios-bullseye-i386.iso - is there a 64 bit version ?

Mon Feb 20, 2023 7:28 pm

I got 2022-07-01-raspios-bullseye-i386.iso running in VMware.

Just wondering if there is a 64 bit version.

No.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPi OS Bullseye w/ Desktop OS.

No.
As 64-bit is now common for new Pi 4B based installations of Raspberry Pi OS, it seems time for a 64-bit desktop for x86 based computers.

It does say "System: 32-bit" on https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/ra ... i-desktop/, but does it not have a 64-bit kernel for 64-bit CPUs, just like 32-bit Raspberry Pi OS has a 64-bit kernel? Raspberry Pi OS 32-bit has had a 64-bit kernel for at long time. Since it is Debian maybe the 32-bit OS could be converted completely to 64-bit.

Why not just run 64-bit Debian?

OK, it looks different but fundamentally you can end up with the same O/S...

Is there something specific in the Pi build you need?

^^ Exactly. I'd rather have the RasPiOS dev team make the best damn OS for the Pi. Debian is already quite good on Intel boxes...

Does 2022-07-01-raspios-bullseye-i386.iso have a 64-bit kernel for 64-bit CPUs? just like 32-bit Raspberry Pi OS has a 64-bit kernel.

I would like the same look as on Raspberry Pi and the same programs from the distribution, except those that are not allowed: e.g. Mathematica and Wolfram. An alternative to a distribution could be script that transforms a regular Debian into the Raspberry Pi Desktop. Then the script might need to add a repo for the Raspberry Pi unique programs, but then someone need to provide 64-bit (x86-64) versions.
