Recreate old style documentation?

Sun Mar 12, 2023 8:38 pm

After spending an hour trying to find the old documentation page at:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... systemd.md

I've here:

https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/bring- ... mentation/

found that despite the old style documentation was removed (it wasn't saved by Internet Archive) the missing entries styled by old look&feel could be regenerated from the github snapshots by using the same scripts used to generate the old style docs.

The question is - are the docs maintainers willing to share the scripts and resources required to regenerate the old style docs?

If nobody responds here, I would suggest opening an issue on a github repository some Pi developers roam.
I am aware of 3 official RPi-related organizations on Github. Not sure why there is more than one, but here they are: Also be aware that you can email info@raspberrypi.org.
Easily install anything on your Pi using Pi-Apps. Over 2 million users.
Over 200 apps including image editors, IDEs, games, web browsers, appearance themes, and more to upgrade your Raspberry Pi desktop.

Github site for the official documentation is:
https://github.com/raspberrypi/documentation

Since it's a version control repository, you should be able to get the older version of the code and document markdown there.
(I only use Mercurial, so I don't know how to get old versions out of GitHub)

A catch is that the old markdown source for the documents is not up to date. To get updated documentation you'll need to convert the updated docs from Asciidoc format to markdown for use in the old markdown based tool chain.

No, although mainly because those scripts simply don't exist anymore. As I said in the post, it was all a bit of a mess. They weren't in any revision control system, and had been written by someone that had left the org several years before. The only existing copy was on the prod server, which got spun down around the time when the websites for Raspberry Pi Limited and the Raspberry Pi Foundation became separate sites.

A full list of our official GitHub organisations can be found on GitHub. Repositories and projects under these organisations are officially supported.
