Gain 2 vs gain 32 would make huge difference, but it also pulls up the noise level dramatically.

Yep, much more noise.but it also pulls up the noise level dramatically.
But if this is a night image compare them against those first daylight ones in this post.
This is the IMX327 Starvis, says camera board SE327MBD.
The IMX662 Starvis 2 are supposed to have lower noise.
If same driver works then the IMX662 should be even better and just drop in.
My USB IMX291 is not getting anything like these images.
I might have look at the driver software.
Much better if the Pi has control instead of a USB chip that cannot be tweaked.

sohonomura2020 has responded to me via email.
HCG is intended for HDR modes to differentiate the different images.
Having read up a bit more, I don't see how this would be converted into a generic V4L2 control, so it's a bit of a funny one.
You already have 30dB of analogue gain available in this driver, or x31.6. OK it's in the analogue domain, but on 12bit data that would be the equivalent of expanding 0-132 to the full 0-4095 step range.
It could be shifted into a module parameter (as things like external trigger and disabling DPC have been), but that's not a brilliant solution longer term.
I lose track of all the sensors I've looked at over the years. Whilst IMX662 appears to be the next in the 327/290/462 family, I believe it programs some settings in a different manner to the earlier modules. It's therefore likely to need a different driver, and it looks slightly trickier than before to make generic settings.

IMX585 board sample will be launched soon, Re: IMX327/IMX462/IMX662 Excellent Sensitivity MIPI Camera Module for Raspber
We prepare launching SE-SB8M-IMX585 board directly connected to Raspberrypi.

Just pass the image capturing test in the Fab, and shipped to me soon.
It will be combined with the Pan-Tilt remote camera mount and the equatorial mount kit.

The other people to talk to for Pi compatible image sensors is Vision Components - https://www.vision-components.com/en/pr ... ical-data/
They don't list IMX678, but will do custom modules if you're prepared to pay for them.
