I'm trying to put either Ubuntu Core or the Nextcloud appliance on my Pi 4, but I keep getting an error that says "start4.elf: is not compatible". The firmware is from 2021.

you need to either use a newer OS image, or update the firmware on the SD card

And/or ask the developers of those third party OS to fix their images. Especially if you're using their latest.
