There is a difference between 32-bit and 64-bit RPiOS:
dpkg -L libcamera0 | grep ov5647_noir
[32] /usr/share/libcamera/ipa/raspberrypi/ov5647_noir.json
[64] /usr/share/libcamera/ipa/rpi/vc4/ov5647_noir.json

i still have this issue with Audacity on my RasPi OS. and i have no workaround.
i can not find the source of that specific version 2.4.2~dfsg0-5,
https://github.com/audacity/audacity/bl ... O.cpp#L958
there is noted that it maybe should be compiled in another way... if the assert message is thrown from there.
On the off chance you're still looking for a solution for this, here's what worked for me (this was on a Pi 4B).

Remove the audacity and audacity-data packages.

Download audacity and audacity 2.4.2~dfsg0-5 debs from packages.debian.org/bullseye/armhf.

https://packages.debian.org/bullseye/ar ... y/download
https://packages.debian.org/bullseye/ar ... a/download

Install these (audacity-data first). Run audacity. No assert on startup.

The audacity binary is different between the deb from here and the one that was installed from Rpi. You'd think the packages would be identical, but apparently not.

Happy audacity'ing.

VLC has problems after the latest update. Normally, when in fullscreen, "esc" should turn back to window mode. After the latest updates, esc just kills vlc. By the way, even whan active in the settings, it does not remember the playback position.

the thing with [ESC] happens on my system as well, but not always.

Another "long term" problem is desktop becoming unresponsive to mouse clicks when RPI is left untouched for a while. The solution i found is to do ctrl+alt+del, and then cancel the shutdown options pop up, then desktop becomes responsive again.

These things that i mentioned are still happening. VLC does not remember the playback position and when in fullscreen, any attempt at exiting fullscreen ends up in shutting down the app completely.

I discovered that it actually worked better after some update. I haven't tracked which versions, but it seems difficult to get it 'perfect' on RPiOS. See also viewtopic.php?t=356193

For months it has been like that. When i go fullscreen, there is no turning back. The moment i press ESC to go back to window mode, VLC just kills itself. Double click in full screen does exactly the same thing. The app just crashes. When i rerun the program, the video starts from the beginning which means VLC also fails to remember the playback position.

I am on a RPIOS 64bit. Latest version of everthing.

I'm also on RPIOS 64bit and I just tried to play an mp4 switch to full screen then press ESC to go back to window mode. It worked the was so screen flashing but it didn't crash and video kept playing.

Maybe your not using dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d in your config.txt?

It could you have to uninstall and reinstall it? I'm running from an SSD That could make a difference.

This is a complete reinstall from scratch. The problem still persists. I have that line you mentioned in my config.txt. I have tried different GPU memory portions. It is all the same. Coming back from full screen crashes VLC. By the way, i mostly play "HEVC" files (X265). I don't know if that makes any difference. Also, if i change the output renderer to OpenGL, the problem goes away. I even can see the OSD when i do that. However, detrimentally, "screen tearing" is the negative outcome of selecting OpenGL as renderer.

So, all in all, VLC still has lots of issues under RPIOS. I don't think it is just me. We are in need of an alternative at least. "Kodi" is the way to go i guess. But of course, it has its own issues and defects.

i am also affected by this issue since few weeks/months. nearly always VLC close itself (crash?) when i try to go from fullscreen back to window mode by pressing [ESC]-key.
only in some really really rare cases it goes back as normal.
i watch mostly mp4 videos.

i am running RaspiOS bullseye 32bit (from 2021-10-30 and updated regularly over time) on my RPi4 4GB from an SSD (on USB3).
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d is set in config.txt

I have a Pi 4 Model B 4 GB RAM with running the OS below and I have the screen blanking bug. I did the updates mentioned here, it seemed to work once or twice, but now I can see the screen going blank and the monitor comes right back a few seconds later. I turned the screen blanking ON and OFF and rebooter each time, I tried both from the control panel and also from the terminal utility.

I don't know what else to try. Maybe I just make a habit of turning the monitor ON and OFF manually.

Code: Select all

Release date: May 3rd 2023
System: 64-bit
Kernel version: 6.1
Debian version: 11 (bullseye)

I understand that RPI5 is on schedule to be released so all the attention of the software team is probably on it right now to make things work until the release, however, VLC is the "only" video playback program that can be used under RPI4 and it has been a long time since this bug has been reported. Can RPI4 still get a little bit more love, maybe at least after the release of the PI5? It would be appreciated.

I assume there will be a sort of 'big-bang' posting the Bookworm image for all Pis. You might want to 'burn' a fresh image, I will do the well known Debian sources.list* edits etc and then upgrade. I will need to remove bullseye-backports here and there, but no hurry for me. For several Pis I did a dist-upgrade to Debian Testing some time ago, on a Pi3B+ fullscreen console videoplaying with mpv worked really well. But you want desktop GUI I guess, so the easy/best way is to prepare for change to Wayland. You can do it now, but it is experimental in RPiOS Bullseye, so windows might be wrong-sized and so on. As long as it doesn't crash, it might be a better choice. In Bookworm for sure, Pi is not good for using X11.
I am currently typing this on my Pi4-8GB (with bullseye-backports and KDE-Plasma DE), works good enough playing HEVC/H265 1080p50 videos, although I see stutter when a server process on this Pi gets more active. Also that might be gone with Wayland, we will see.

I just tried wayland (sudo raspi-config) and it has so many problems still. One of the most obvious was when i opened Chromium, there was no button on the taskbar for it, so when you minimize it, it is gone. The on screen text however seemed improved in wayland (seemed like microsoft's clear type to me). And videos played fine both in fullscreen and windowed in VLC so yeah, wayland actually fixes "that" problem but it comes with its own set of issues yet.

VLC fullscreen problem seems to have been fixed. There is a new output mode in VLC now which is called "X11 video output (XCB)". If you select this one, you can go full screen and come back without any issues. There is no screen tearing, and you can actually see the video controls in fullscreen now. Great work, whoever has done it. I was considering upgrading to Bookworm, but seeing that people are complaining about so many things, i have decided to stay on Bullseye for a while. If it works, don't fix it.

I always wondered about the screen tearing in Bullseye that people report, I never actually saw it. My recipe is disabling the compositor in the KDE plasma settings and using the default sddm, after getting rid of every trace of mutter openbox lx* rpi hacks etc. My first trial long time ago was with Xfce, some good results actually (openSUSE Tumbleweed). If you have used KDE for years on PC/tablet, it is simple workaround. Note that I disable all animations, I use KDE mainly for its default apps with konsole the main one. Besides FireFox and mpv.

Wayland is good concept, but it is 'new'. I notice less real-time mouse behavior, both KDE and a fresh 2023-10-10 image I tested on my test Pi4. The Bookworm default desktop is good basic, but I still get the immediate feeling that I play with some toy computer again like in 2014 or so when I bought the Pi1 unfortunately, even though the Pi4-8GB runs/manages my whole house more or less.

PiOS64 Bookworm KDE Wayland or X11 doesn't really matter actually, Wayland is more buggy but faster under the hood, but Pi4 is fast enough to handle the normal X11 overhead. The limited internal bus effects are still there, so when high load multitasking, don't use VC4/HDMI, only the ARMs so headless or use other computer platform.

I spoke too early. X11 video output module can not display subtitles. This time i actually opened a bug report, hopefuly in the right place:

RealVNC server, which is still used/enabled by raspi-config on RPi 1 2 and 3 models, is working on 64 bits versions of the OS, but is broken in 32 bits version, because 32 bits version is relying on libmmal.so

Hi there,
Just an idea for the next version of the OS - when switching through with Alt + Tab, I've noticed that it doesn't seem to take into account what program I was using last, it simply flicks through a list of what programs I have open. This means if I'm trying to quickly flick between two applications, e.g. Terminal and Chromium, but I also have a few other windows open I first have to sort through the other windows before I reach Terminal/Chromium, at which point I'll have to cycle through again. Another idea is that I can only see 3 windows at a time - perhaps that could be changed for something similar to what Windows and MacOS do, (it displaying all available options)? Also being able to scroll through the available windows with the arrow keys, scroll wheel, or wasd could be an idea.
Thanks :)
