Additional hardware for Pi 5?

Sat Sep 30, 2023 2:17 am

I have many Pi 4 devices, and would have had many more if they hadn't become so difficult to obtain. One of the things that I liked about the 4, in particular, was the capability of being powered by PoE. I have now put in pre-orders for two Pi 5 devices, from different sellers; one 4GB model and one 8GB model. It appears as if we will still need a HAT in order to use PoE but it also appears that none exist that will work for the Pi 5; is that correct?

On a slightly different note, is there any 3D technical drawings yet for the 5 so that I can design my own custom case?

A Hat is still needed but the new one has not been released yet.

Read the blog https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/introd ... erry-pi-5/
PoE+ HAT

From early 2024, we will be offering a new PoE+ HAT. This supports the new location for the four-pin PoE header, and has an L-shaped form factor which allows it to sit inside the Raspberry Pi 5 case without interfering mechanically or disrupting airflow.

A visibly hand-soldered prototype of the L-shaped Raspberry Pi PoE+ HAT for Raspberry Pi 5
Prototype PoE+ HAT. We don’t know yet what the production version will look like, but we do know that it won’t look like this.
The new PoE+ HAT integrates a planar transformer into the PCB layout, and utilises an optimised flyback converter architecture to sustain high efficiency across the whole zero to 25W range of output powers.

What version of PoE do you have in mind? How much max power can you supply I would have to ask?
