Raspberry Pi Desktop for PC and Mac & application failures

Thu Nov 09, 2023 8:40 am

Debian 11 installation on i386 laptop
uname -srm
Linux 5.10.0-21-amd64 x86_64

cat /etc/os-release
PRETTY_NAME="Debian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye)"
NAME="Debian GNU/Linux"
VERSION="11 (bullseye)"

I've been using the above RPi Desktop O/S setup for 18 months, predominantly for my amateur radio pursuits.
Recently though, I discovered that several applications were failing to launch.

After checking the Messages and Kern logs the same error was being shown:

Oct 27 09:04:51 raspberry kernel: [ 173.395932] wsjtx[3516]: segfault at 0 ip 00000000f5b07325 sp 00000000fff10970 error 4 in[f5a4a000+31e000]

Oct 26 20:23:14 raspberry kernel: [ 70.087884] wsjtx[1777]: segfault at 4e0000 ip 00000000f5b58325 sp 00000000fffd0be0 error 4 in[f5a9b000+31e000]

Following several rebuilds to try and identify any failing O/S components, I eventually stumbled upon the cause!

Changing the Desktop Preferences - Appearance Settings, from medium to small screens caused the applications to fail.

This is not evident across the board and so far I have only found the following applications to be affected by this:

WSJTX - Fails to launch
ShowFoto - Opens a screen which is unusable with a black border and grey rectangles.

Flip/flopping between the two screen sizes restores the correct operation of the applications.

After dropping a similar post on the Debian forum and then submitting a message to the Raspberry Pi enquiry team under #99655, it was suggested I notify the application vendors.

Reviewing the error messages above, I believe this may also be an O/S issue, however I will notify the relevant application vendors.

This post is to assist other users who may have had/or are experiencing similar issues.
