Can we make two Pico W communicate without the wifi?

Wed Dec 06, 2023 11:38 am

Hi all

I want to send signals back and forth from two controllers wirelessly, in the range of 50-60 metres.
One of the controllers will then decide to switch off or on an electric motor based on a few logical decisions (need to be executed separately from different sensors at both the locations 50-60 metres apart).

There is no wifi available in the vicinity.

Is it possible to do this with two Raspberry Pi Pico W?

Regards

You can set one Pico W as a Wi-Fi access point and have the other as a client which connects to it.

No idea if that will work over 60 metres.

You can throw a Wi-Fi router into the mix. That doesn't need to be connected to the internet, just mains or a suitable power supply.

Maybe (low cost) set one pico W as an Access Point and get the othe pico W to connect to that. Test the range using one pico W (as APj and an app on your iPhone/ Android phone (e.g. WiFi Analyzer). Or have a third pico W half way between the two, as an AP.
I assume all cabling / coax / Ethernet cable, RS485 solutions are already ruled out. (Cross posted)

Thanks for your responses.
Yes, idea was to save myself from cables and joints.

I will order 2 Pico W's and test. Will use Pi 3 in between if need be, which I already have.

Whilst waiting for the order, you could test the range using the pi3 (as an AP) and an app on your iPhone/ Android phone (e.g. WiFi Analyzer).
Let us know how it goes.

Hi all

Tested safe range of PICO W as a wifi access point is around 17-18 metres without any obstructions in the way. Post 18 metres, the connection was weak and then further away it starts disconnecting and connecting.

Note: PICO W was powered by USB 2.0 to MicroUSB cable from a laptop.

There are modules
- HC-12
- NRF69, see https://learn.adafruit.com/lora-and-lor ... spberry-pi

Throughput is not high, but range is better than wifi.
