MagPi Issue 138 Page 40: (Pi 5) Real Time Clock (RTC)

Mon Feb 19, 2024 1:53 pm

Guys,
I bought a Pi5 when they came out and recently the battery module to support the real time clock when the power was off. This triggered me to read the article at subject above as there was no connection detail supplied with the battery.

One image bottom of page 41 centres on the UART connector set between the two micro HDMI connectors and the label for the Pi5 image bottom of page 42 is telling me to connect my new battery to the UART connector. ALARM!!! NO!!! This cannot be correct.

Reading the text labelling the larger Pi5 board image at the top of page 42 it clearly outlines connecting the battery to connector J5.

I'm going to go with the J5 connector located between the USB-C power connector and the first micro HDMI connector. Fingers crossed!

The connectors are different sizes, so the plug won't fit in the wrong socket.
J5 connector is also labelled "BAT" on the silkscreen, so yes that is the one for the battery.

Dom,
Thanks. I thought I was losing it.

Remember though, and in the light of misleading data, there is no beating the creativity of a novice on a mission to connect their Pi5 battery.

"The RTC Battery connects to the UART connector sitting between the two micro-HDMI ports"

No, that's definitely incorrect. I guess it slipped through proof-reading and needs correcting.
