Quite some problems with bookwurm on PI5

Wed Feb 28, 2024 9:33 pm

Hi,

Having bought a Pi5, I now have to switch to Bookwurm and Wayland, however there are a few showstoppers. Can you please help me with these problems, or tell me where to shoot them in as a bug? Super thanks!!

First the showstoppers that make me want to throw the pi5 out of the window, and prevent me from updating my 5 pi-workstations to a pi5:

1. If I right-click on the icon of a running application in the menubar and choose menu-item "Close", then the whole pi closes down and the users gets logged out (and I have to give my password to login, which I do not even have to do when I start the pi). Yes I am not joking, and this is idioticly annoying! I already lost a lót of work because of this, because it always comes unexpected and this is my normal way of shutting down apps. Unsaved files are lost every time. It is really unacceptible to have a hard and unexpected full shutdown of the pi. Help!!!!

2. I usually have a lot of windows open with different folders. Now, when I doubleclick a folder, a tab is created in an existing folder-window instead! I don't like these kind of changes at all. How can I change the default behavior of doubleclicking on a folder (on the desktop) and make sure it opens a new window (just like I am used to since Windows 3.1)? Yes I already looked at pcmanfm settings but couldn't find it. Thanks!

3. If I doubleclick a file and that app is already opened and miminised (like a Geany or Gimp), then that app does nót get the focus and does nót maximise, instead the app opens the file but really nothing visually happens! So now I doubleclick three times on a .txt or .php file before I realise Geany already opened the file and I have to go to Geany myself. The same happens with all applications like GIMP, folderwindows, etc. In general, it happens about 20 times in a day. How to fix this annoyance?

4. If I drag files fromout xarchiver or fileroller to the Desktop or into a folder, it should decompress the selected files&folders, but nothing happens instead. I guess the archivers do not acknowledge the new Desktop. I guess this is really definitely a bug, or a feature that nobody checked before jumping on the Wayland train. What is a workaround?

The rest are just annoying things but I can see myself getting used to most of them:

5. How can I rearrange the icons in the Launcher in the menu bar? If I right-click the menu bar, choose "Add/Remove Plugins", select launcher, click "Configure", then it only lets me define a pixel width, but not anymore the good old settings where I can add/remove/reorder launcher icons. Where did the access to these settings disappear to? It used to be exactly there.

6. and by the way, that "Add/Remove Plugins" window is (with my huge font due to currently installing on a TV) not readable, like a lot of windows I have to make them bigger manually. Seems like the automatic resizer does not/barely work in a lot of dialogs..

7. If I drag files (on the same disk to a different folder) and thén press CTRL, it ignores the CTRL so then files are not copied. Aghr. Very frustrating to suddenly learn to press CTRL fírst and then start dragging. Can't Wayland detect that I am pressing the CTRL key when I am already dragging? Where can I add this feature request?

8. First thing I usually do when installing an OS is disable animations. These little animations make my day a half hour shorter, I have more important things to do than watch animations. Is it correct that these can not be turned off? Puppy eyes pretty please?

9. Nobody ever noticed that if you rename a file on the desktop, it loses its x/y-coordinates and jumps to the upper left corner? Not really important but I notice it everytime I work again on Raspberry Pi OS coming back from another OS. Can be quite annoying if you need to rename a lot of stuff.

Super thanks for any hints, or locations where to enter bugs/feature requests. Thanks!
Niels

"Have to switch... "

Bookworm? Yes, there is no trivial alternative for a version of RasPiOS on an RPi[5].

Wayland? Not so rigid. You have the choice of running 'legacy' x11 gui components.

Wow, thanks, that was bugging me for the past few updates

It also looks like <ALT>+F4 has also been fixed as this also shut the PI down and put you back to the login screen

Thanks!

Yes nr. 1 is indeed fixed! I'll report the rest as bugs after checking whether it is still happens and whether it is not already reported.

Edit the file /home/****/.config/wf-panel-pi.ini
1. Pi 4B as Apache 2.4 [Bullseye]
2. Pi 4B as Desktop with LG TV [Bookworm]
