Re: What is your current PC/OS
I use Ubuntu 14.04 on my desktop, my computer hooked to the TV, and my spare.
My RPis are all running Raspbian except one that runs Ubuntu Mint.
My hostnames all relate to Norton or Velocette motorcycles.
I would love to get my hands on one of them but a ride a Ducati single.
I learned to ride on an Enfield Bullet.

Is it worth upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 10?

It is more than worth it, because windows 10 feels more like a desktop environment than a touch base "smart phone" .Woll wrote:Is it worth upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 10?

By thinking like an engineer you can create a raspberry pi.

I got the PI model B, B+ and PI 2 model B.
When will I get the A? I don't know.

Re: What is your current PC/OS
You might as well upgrade from Win 8 to Win 10. In the long run you have no choice. Not many are doggedly hanging on to Win XP or Windows 95.
On the other hand you could join the cool kids of the young generation and get a Mac.
On the third hand. I have used nothing but Linux since last century.
If nothing else it's great to be able to use the same skills on your Raspberry Pi as your PC.
Of course the question is meaningless unless you state what it is you want to use this Win 8 or Win 10 tool for.

Re: What is your current PC/OS
To tell you the truth, I'm not a big lover of Windows and preferred Windows 98 to Windows 8. I like Raspbian because it is lighter than Windows and doesn't updated by itself. My main internet device is my Android tablet. I'm just wondering if anyone recommends Windows 10?
As Microsoft is distancing itself from Windows 8, they may withdraw all support from it like they did Windows XP.

Re: What is your current PC/OS
As said. You have no choice. MS will not support Win 8 forever. Eventually when you are forced to give that up there will be Win 15 or 20 or whatever.
If you are into Raspbian and Android. Why do you need Windows at all? Just put Debian on your machines.

I'm thinking of it. I don't you my laptop alot anymore. Microsoft have lost so much ground. Computers and computer usage have changed and Microsoft hasn't kept up. Windows seems to heavy.

Re: What is your current PC/OS
I've just excavated my desktop and got it running again (finally finished doing the house, almost a year since we started) I can't really blame the house for the desktop being buried, it had't been turned on in three years and not regularly used in six.
(Yes the first tasks were to update antivirus, anti-spam and web-browser).
I'll probably get around to putting Linux on it but at the moment it's running Windows XP.
The desktop is about 12 years old, My laptop about 9 (and also running XP) (and has no battery life but does have some legacy programs installed that I don't want to lose).

My XP desktop used to take about 20 minutes to boot up. That's why I got a Tablet. Microsoft turned me into an Android user. Google likes there business model.

Re: What is your current PC/OS
Windows is very heavy. Buying a super fast computer doesn't make sense. It shouldn't be the computers that should always be upgraded to cope with the software, the software should be optimized for the hardware, with certain features being faster on a better computer. Having a fast computer is not an excuse to write lazy code.expandables wrote:Windows isn't "heavy" buy a decent i7 computer with an ssd and you are all good.Woll wrote:I'm thinking of it. Linux, I've tried, is much faster than my Windows laptop ever was, which is why its the only thing that's on it. A server edition of Ubuntu, nice and fast.

If i can remember Android is Linux and it is terribly slow on a cheap dual core smart phone, but "fast" on a high end quad core smart phone.kusti8 wrote:Windows is very heavy. SO the problem you all are having is not buying an up to date computer that can handle the current operating system.
Also if Linux is better than windows then why would anyone pay for it especially since Linux is free?
I can count on my finger how much people i know that uses Linux and if I did, it would be 1 finger which would be me.

Re: What is your current PC/OS
The reason people don't use Linux is because it didn't start out as user friendly and there's nobody to push the manufacturers to use Linux. Android is a skinned Linux, meaning lots of bloat.

Anyways, normal Ubuntu was much faster than Windows also.me wrote:A server edition of Ubuntu, nice and fast.

Windows is way too heavy. Windows 95 was okay as it was an operating system but it crashed alot. Now Windows seems to choke PC's.

Android certainly uses the Linux kernel. Much of what is on top of that is Java. Which as you know is slow and bloated. If i can remember Android is Linux and it is terribly slow...

When I was a kid, there was dozen's of different computer manufactures using different computer models. Then IBM and Microsoft dominated everything and only Apple survived to challenge IBM/Microsoft. Now it seems to be fragmenting again. And I've never met anyone who likes Windows 8.
