I'm halfway through building a cluster of 21 pi 3's to be used to teach network and parallel programming to students.
I think I have the power problem sorted out and also a viable heat sink which I will test tonight. Communication will be via a 24 port unmanaged switch with one master pi and 20 slaves. MPI will be running on all pi's.
BTW Grendel was the monster that Beowolf killed......

Re: Grendel....80 core Pi 3 cluster
~very cool !
... I'm assuming Grendel will be a true Beowulf cluster? yes? I have been waiting for someone to build one with PIs (or Pine64 boards!) . Its on my back burner... you beat me to it !

You'd have to source the Pine64+ boards. They seem to be rarer than a Zero. (And I can't get mine to GigE, it's stuck with the current half-supported software.)

'Its alive....its ALIVE'
60A 5V power supply running to 24 usb connectors
Netgear 24 port unmanaged switch
24 Pi 3's with Enzotech BMR-C1 extruded copper heat sinks in 3 stacks of 8
Asus VC239 23" wide screen monitor
One C14 ICE power lead ( a 3 prong 'kettle' lead) powers 5v supply, monitor and switch.
The footprint of the system will be the same as the Asus monitor and is briefcase size, building the case now.
Just started stripping the os on the master node and will use jessie lite on the 23 slaves.
