bluetooth dongle not detected

Tue Aug 25, 2015 5:34 pm

Hi everyone,

I have just bought my first Raspberry Pi (model 2). I bought it with a USB dongle, as I am intending to make a home-brew Sonos system.

The Pi came with a NOOB memory card. When I first booted up the Pi, I noticed a small blue light on the bluetooth dongle flashing, and recall that a bluetooth device was listed in the dmesg output. However, one of the first things I did on the system was to run an apt-get update, and then installed bluetooth and blues-utils. After doing this, I rebooted the Pi.

Now, the bluetooth dongle no longer has a flashing blue light, and hciconfig does not report any devices. The dmesg output does not show any detected bluetooth device, and I also notice that there is no device showing in the output from lsusb. Is it possible that the latest OS update has somehow broken the Bluetooth functionality ?

I have just put the dongle into another machine, and it is working fine.

Here is my lsusb output (the Logitech receiver is the receiver dongle for a wireless keyboard & mouse):

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0424:9514 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMC9514 Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:ec00 Standard Microsystems Corp. SMSC9512/9514 Fast Ethernet Adapter
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 046d:c52b Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver
If anyone can assist with getting Bluetooth working that would be awesome. Thanks.

Install Blueman it will install bluez and other dependencies:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get blueman
sudo reboot
Also add the following to config.txt to increase USB BUS from 600ma to 1200ma:

Code: Select all

max_usb_current=1

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I am getting the following:

Code: Select all

root@raspberrypi:~# apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
  lxpanel lxpanel-data minecraft-pi raspberrypi-ui-mods
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 4 not upgraded.
root@raspberrypi:~# apt-get install blueman
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
blueman : Depends: obex-data-server (>= 0.4.3) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
For some reason this obex-data-server seems to have an issue that is preventing blueman from installing?

Thanks!

I have added that line to config.txt and rebooted the Pi.

I have also now managed to install the bluetooth manager package.

lsusb is still not listing the bluetooth dongle though :-(

I have just plugged the Bluetooth dongle into another Linux machine I have, and I see the following information in the dmesg output

Code: Select all

usb 4-1: new full speed USB device number 2 using uhci_hcd
usb 4-1: New USB device found, idVendor=1131, idProduct=1004
usb 4-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
usb 4-1: Product: ISSCEDRBTA
usb 4-1: Manufacturer: ISSC
usb 4-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
I don't see this on the Pi when I plug it in though.
Hope that helps to diagnose the issue.

Hi,

You did not install the packages as root!

Update: Another reboot, and the dongle is now detected!

So installing blueman and rebooting seems to have done the trick!

Thanks for your help.

Yes, the OP did. He logged in as root, by either logging in or using su, and executed the commands. Same as running with sudo.

Oh no! I just rebooted the Pi, and it's gone again.. no entry in the output from lsusb.

Unplugging, and reinserting the dongle doesn't help either.

Any ideas?

Just to reply to my own post yet again, I have isolated a pattern here. The dongle will work, provided it is not inserted when the Pi boots. If I let the Pi come up, and then insert it, then it is detected.

Not ideal by any means, but good enough for now. If anyone has any thoughts on how to get round this, that would be much appreciated.

Cheers
