PI 3 and Raspbian Wheezy
If i purchase the PI3 and i have wheezy on an sd card how will i get that to work? Will it work automatically? That's my only concern because i have no plans to upgrade to Jessie now.

Re: PI 3 and Raspbian Wheezy
AFAIAA there is no ARMv8 Kernel in Wheezy, though the best way is to to update Wheezy on your older RPi, then put it in the RPi 3B and see what happens....mathboy4life wrote:If i purchase the PI3 and i have wheezy on an sd card how will i get that to work? Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo rpi-update
sudo reboot

Re: PI 3 and Raspbian Wheezy
you will need the latest firmware
now is the time to upgrade as wheezy is BEOL
so start with a new sdcard and embrace the new.

Re: PI 3 and Raspbian Wheezy
I'll have to stick with the PI 2 because I have custom applications that only works for Raspbian Wheezy.
Hopefully some one can confirm that this works.

So far I can report that this does NOT work. I just get the rainbow square. The green led sends MORSE: - - - - . . . . (dash dash dash dash dot dot dot dot (pause) )RaTTuS wrote:you may get away withCode: Select all

Re: PI 3 and Raspbian Wheezy
Unfortunately looking at the apt repo, is looking like last raspberrypi-bootloader package release for Wheezy was on the 20th December 2015. It didn't receive the 2 releases in early February, nor did it receive the Raspberry Pi 3 version yesterday (29th February). It looks like Raspberry Pi have decided to no longer upgrade the firmware for Wheezy which I will admit it a shame.

Colour me intrigued. What apps could you have that don't work on Jessie?mathboy4life wrote:I'll have to stick with the PI 2 because I have custom applications that only works for Raspbian Wheezy.

It's not morse. It's the GPU telling you what's missing or can't be loaded.rew wrote: So far I can report that this does NOT work. I just get the rainbow square. The green led sends MORSE: - - - - . . . . (dash dash dash dash dot dot dot dot (pause) )
viewtopic.php?f=28&t=58151 tells us it's start.elf missing or incompatible with the hardware.

Re: PI 3 and Raspbian Wheezy
I have installed Raspbian Wheezy using a RPi 2B and update / dist-upgrade / rpi-update and works as expected.fruitoftheloom wrote:Yes maybe, but I will not get my RPi3 until tomorrow to see if Wheezy works.....mathboy4life wrote:Awesome there is hope
Put the SD Card in a RPi 3B and yes it booted, but no support for on-board Wireless and Bluetooth out of the box, so yes it works but feel Wheezy has hit the buffers in terms of up to date packages available.

Hey Fruity did you found a way to install the WiFi chipset on Wheezy?

Re: PI 3 and Raspbian Wheezy
I used Wheezy as an experiment to see if it would boot up, it does on a Standalone .IMG, not sure about NOOBS install though.mathboy4life wrote:Hey Fruity did you found a way to install the WiFi chipset on Wheezy?
I was not interested in trying to install missing drivers / network / Bluetooth as Jessie .IMG I knew would "work out of the box"

Re: PI 3 and Raspbian Wheezy
Jessie just came out couple months ago and I don't see how the rpf can say it's end of life for Wheezy.
There should be an update for wheezy at least tell 2017. I cant see how there is no recent update to Wheezy.

Raspbian Jessie was released in September 2015 https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/raspbi ... ie-is-here
Debian Jessie was released April 2015
Debian Wheezy on which Raspbian is based goes into Community Support April 2016
https://wiki.debian.org/LTS
FYI there have been updates to the kernel/firmware and security issues addressed if needed

Last but not least Jessie going to SystemD caused a lot of work and going forward most RPi OSes will have SystemD so IMPO the RPF made the correct decision........
