PiServer - Error executing certtool

Thu Feb 08, 2018 9:51 pm

Currently running Raspberry Pi Desktop on older Intel (Celeron M) single processor PC.

The Debian OS is updated and upgraded; the "uname -a" command returns: "Debian 4.9.65-3+deb9u2 (2018-01-04).

When I launch PiServer, I see the RPi3 on my network and advance through the setup screens: "Add Clients", "Add Users", "Add software".
I choose "Install operating system from repository" (Raspbian 2017-11-29).

However, the os does not download from repository after indicating "Installing LDAP, NFS and DHCP server software".
This error message is received:
Error executing 'certtool --generate-self-signed --load-privkey /etc/ldap/piserver.key --template=/etc/ldap/piserver.tpl --outfile=/etc/ssl/certs/piserver.pem'
The only option is to click "OK", whereupon PiServer quits.

Anyone else having this problem?

Yes, I am experiencing this also.

Had been successfully using the Debian stretch version of Raspbian Desktop in a VM running on a QNAP NAS to deploy and run a couple RPi3s. This was followed by a period of inactivity where I used the PiServer server for unrelated tasks. It evolved into use as a workstation after some time.

I eventually circled back to trying to setup and use the PiServer and its pxe boot clients ... only to discover it wasn't working as in the past. After some tinkering I didn't note the error but instead decided to start from scratch as the initial set up wasn't complicated and would have been quicker than my efforts at troubleshooting.

After a fresh install in the VM, I start the PiServer tool, I pxe boot the RPi3 client, the tools sees the client and proceeds to the screen where I set up users and click next. I then click Raspbian [or Raspbian Lite] and it then attempts to download and install only to fail and producing the error below....

Code: Select all

error executing 'certtool --generate-self-signed --load-privkey /etc/ldap/piserver.key --template=/etc/ldap/piserver.tpl --outfile=/etc/ssl/certs/piserver.pem'

Here is the result of running the same command from a terminal window using elevated permissions [sudo]...

This issue seems to have been raised, with a suggested fix, here: https://github.com/raspberrypi/piserver/issues/12

It appears that the PiServer tool is broken. I set the time in my VM back to Oct 12, 2017 ~2pm and the PiServer tool was able to get past the above error messages.

Despite the VM being 64bit the OS is 32bit

Apparently this is a known issue on 32-bit linux operating systems and is known as the Year 2038 problem. Adjusting the date/time is the temporary workaround.

Thx. I didn't see your response until after.

YES -- This hits the nail on the head. MUCH thanks!

I kept reading the PiServer blog comment relating to this issue and the peculiar date-finagling solution, but it seemed (to me) arcane since the purpose of PiServer seemed to be to make net booting simpler for simple folk such as I (albeit with archaic 32 bit systems).

So thankful for your clear demonstration (and solution) for this issue.
Coincidentally, I use VMware and experienced the same PiServer net booting problem as with my old (actual) 32-bit PC.

Thought I would be fine until the real-time of actual 2038
