RPi 4 Ubuntu and No Network functionility

Sun Dec 08, 2019 10:09 pm

OK, I've tried Ubuntu Server 19.10 & 19.10.1 64 and 32 bit (as well as Open Media Vault) and the same issue on all attempts. The Pi didn't connect to the network over Wired or WiFi. It won't update, or install anything it needs to get from repositories, I can't ping, and when I look at devices connected to my network it's just not there.

Raspbian and LibreELEC both work and connect to the Internet just fine. What am I missing? I've updated the Pi's BIOS but that didn't help either.

Errors are Failed to Fetch and Unable to Fetch.

What am I missing, or is there PI compatibility issues?

use default 19.10 image , default username/password, wired connection is DHCP client, connect to my AP with ethernet.
it will works well, eth0 can get IP address with DHCP client.

Before you install the new Ubuntu Server image you should first swop SD card and use Raspbian to install the latest firmware by using the following commands:

1. sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade -y
2. sudo rpi-update
3. sudo rpi-eeprom-update -a

Then insert the Ubuntu SD card (make sure you have the ethernet cable connected) and the power-up your RPI4.

Having done these steps, on reinstalling Ubuntu Server 64, & trying to install a GUI (X/L/Kbuntu-dsktop), the installation goes OK, but no desktop.

Thanks, I've tried that and still get the:
"Unable to fetch" errors while trying to install Xubuntu-Desktop.

make shore you are "root" user..
it may be that the unattended updater is running..
try rebooting a couple of times then try the install process over again..also check your timezone/clock is correct..

is it happening at the start failing to get /connect to the Ubuntu servers to download the packages..??

Yes, I am root.

I've rebooted several times, and each time the date is indeed incorrect. setting the date/time works, but each reboot it does back to the old date
Yes fresh start and still no network connections (scaned IP's from other conputers and no PI ot it's MAC address connection).

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server ... /20191203/

once flash run this code to update it

Code: Select all

apt update && apt-full-upgrade && apt dist-upgrade

Code: Select all

reboot
EDIT:: 1:: as follows=====below

Code: Select all

apt install xubuntu-desktop^ slick-greeter

I flashed a fresh card with ubuntu-19.10.1-preinstalled-server-arm64+raspi3.img from https://ubuntu.com/download/raspberry-pi

I had an Ethernet cable connected to the Pi while loading and after and it still doesn't see the network.

Both the Raspbian and the LibreELEC install load and run as well as see the Internet.

I will try this Daily download and see if it works and let you know.

i think you should check your cabling..

however if you do manage to install xubuntu-desktop

then after it has installed and you are back at the command prompt before you reboot it remove the standard greeter

Code: Select all

apt remove lightdm-gtk-greeter

Code: Select all

reboot
this will after a reboot bring up the login screen

No cabling issues, the cable works on the other computer, and I pulled the Ubuntu card, slid in the Rasbian card in with no change in the cable and I have both WiFi and Ethernet connections.

OK, THANKS! Progress is being made.

On the Pi Ubuntu Server release:

sudo dhclient -v and sudo dhclient -v -r only got me IP addresses (both Wifi and Ethernet), but no network connection.

I used sudo dhclient -4 -v and got connection (Ethernet only) and was able to run the update.

My Internet supplier isn't providing IPV6 address, but their modem does hand them out internally, perhaps this is the problem?

On the "http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server ... /20191203/" download the sudo dhclient -v got me IP addresses and connections on Ethernet, while the sudo dhclient -v -r killed the connection.

Unable to get the Wifi to get a IPV4 address, as it keeps getting an IPV6 address with no connection.

With the Ethernet connection now established I successfully ran the sudo apt update && apt-full-upgrade && apt dist-upgrade command.

After rebooting I still had to run the sudo dhclient -v command to get a network connection on Ethernet.

I then ran the sudo apt install xubuntu-desktop^ slick-greeter command to install the xUbuntu Desktop.

After the install completes I issue the reboot, and it does, but after the normal ubuntu text is done I get a black screen.

Code: Select all

sudo su
and run the below code...

Yep, Thanks.

CTRL+ALT + F2
Logged in
sudo dhclient -v
(to get network access)
sudo su
apt remove lightdm-gtk-greeter
reboot

The reboot was slow, but It did and I got a GUI Login Screen. Once logged in I had to open a terminal and issue the dhclient -v command to get a connection.

Yea, kind of strange on the only wanting to connect thru IPV6. Guess I need to check with my SIP and see if I should be getting an IPV6 address, or find a way to disable it (no obvious way on their modem to turn it off).

THANKS a lot for the help!
Will

After running a dhclient -v wlan0 command and letting it work, I got 2G wireless connect-ability (no 5G ability). This also allows it to reconnect after rebooting without issuing the dhclient command again like I'm having to do with the Ethernet. So more progress.

do you connect directly to the gateway..
maybe you need to put a router in the series line and connect via the router...????

Very strange indeed.

I've got the Ethernet connected to a switch, then to the ISP Modem/Router/Wifi, but I've now connected Wifi to both my ISP Wifi and my Wifi access point on 2G with no issues, just can't get 5G.

So to be sure I know what steps make it work, and what I had to do to get things like Ethernet and sound working, here is the complete list of steps I went thru after starting over with an Ubuntu Server install for the Raspberry 4 - 19.10.1 (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/19.1 ... pi3.img.xz).

sudo dhclient -v (To get Ethernet Connectivity)
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
sudo apt install xubuntu-core^ slick-greeter
(Create /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf)
sudo nano /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
(Add lines:)
[SeatDefaults]
greeter-session=slick-greeter
(Save and Exit)
sudo reboot

Once rebooted I can connect to a Wifi 2G Network fine, but the Ethernet Connection dosn't work unless you open a Terminal and Issue the "sudo dhclient -v" command

(to add the FireFox Browser Open a Terminal and issue the following command:)
sudo apt-get install firefox

(to add the LibreOffice Open a Terminal and issue the following command:)
sudo apt-get install libreoffice-common

(to add the VLC Media Player Open a Terminal and issue the following command:)
sudo apt-get install vlc

(to add the Synaptic Package Manager Open a Terminal and issue the following command:)
sudo apt-get install synaptic

(Now use Synaptic to install Software store)

(Now use Synaptic to install Update Manager)

(After each reboot to have Ethernet connectivity you will need to open a terminal and issue the "sudo dhclient -v" command).

(In /boot/firmware/usercfg.txt I added a line to allow sound on the HDMI monitor:
dtparam=audio=on. I accidentally found this while googling Raspberry Pi 4 sound driver)

something is not right with your network or maybe your board is faulty..

you should not have to issue the dhclient all the time...

even when i had xubuntu loadeed i did not have the issue..or for that matter 19.10...

something is not right

i have done many installs with any op sys and never had ethernet problems..so i`m wondering ...it only leaves your entire network setup or your board..!!!

Indeed, I need to get it and a monitor down to the ISP router and give it a try, and/or take it to a different ISP supplied location and give it a try.
