Help needed with installing Tenda U6 Wifi dongle (rtl8192eu)

Tue Jan 21, 2020 10:29 pm

Hi All,

I've been having a hard time trying to install the drivers for this usb wifi dongle. Could you kindly help me please? The RPi board is a raspberry Pi 2 running raspbian stretch.

The rpi board is working perfectly with an older dlink usb dongle where I didn't need to install any drivers however I have the Tenda U6 laying around and would want to benefit from the extended range of this wifi adapter.

The driver is rtl8192eu

Many thanks,
Luis

I compile a variety of wifi drivers for Raspbian OS including the 8192eu driver.

My drivers are available at http://downloads.fars-robotics.net/wifi-drivers/. Select the driver file that matches the output of command uname -a on your Pi. As an example on my Pi uname -a shows

Code: Select all

Linux Pi-2B-b 4.19.95-v7+ #1292 SMP Thu Jan 16 15:44:55 GMT 2020 armv7l GNU/Linux
so I would need to select the driver file

Code: Select all

8192eu-4.19.95-v7-1292.tar.gz
Run the commands to download and install the driver

Code: Select all

wget http://downloads.fars-robotics.net/wifi-drivers/8192eu-drivers/8192eu-kernel-v7-build.tar.gz
tar xzf 8192eu-kernel-v7-build.tar.gz
./install.sh
As an alternative I also have a script that will automatically select the wifi driver you need depending on your wifi module and the kernel version you are using and download and install it without you needing to determine the driver file yourself.

To install the script use commands

Code: Select all

sudo wget http://downloads.fars-robotics.net/wifi-drivers/install-wifi -O /usr/bin/install-wifi
sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/install-wifi
Then to install the driver use command

Code: Select all

sudo install-wifi
To see details on the various ways you can use the script use command

Code: Select all

sudo install-wifi -h

Hi,
I'm borrowing this thread for my question related to wifi-install

I'm also trying to get my Wifi-dongle to work with your script MrEngman. But I need a different driver. But it does not seam to work for me.

My output:

Code: Select all

Your current kernel revision = 4.19.93+
Your current kernel build = #1290

Checking for a wifi module to determine the driver to install.

Your wifi module is Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0b05:17d1 ASUSTek Computer, Inc. AC51 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wireless Adapter [Mediatek MT7610U]

And it uses the mt7610 driver.

Your Pi revision number is
000e
You have a Pi B v2.0
Checking for a mt7610 wifi driver module for your current kernel.
A driver does not yet exist for this update.
Any idea if I can get my dongle to work with correct drivers for it?

/ Victor

I no longer compile the mt7610 driver as a driver for the mt7610 wifi is now included in Raspbian OS but it needs the firmware installing.

Take a look here https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... 0#p1512821 to get the firmware.

Yes,

Thank you MrEngman for the providing me with the link, thumbs up.

Hi MrEngman

I'm trying to install the drivers but receive the following error:

~ $ sudo wget http://downloads.fars-robotics.net/wifi ... 436.tar.gz
--2021-08-17 22:10:39-- http://downloads.fars-robotics.net/wifi ... 436.tar.gz
Resolving downloads.fars-robotics.net (downloads.fars-robotics.net)... failed: Temporary failure in name resolution.
wget: unable to resolve host address ‘downloads.fars-robotics.net’

Do you have any idea what the problem could be?

Thank you very much!

Do you realise that Mr Engman has been MIA since July.

There's no update to your driver since

8192eu-5.10.49-v8-1436.tar.gz 2021-07-16 00:10 705K

Which is for the now backlevel kernel. (5.10.52 is current).

Hii
I have been successfully installing drivers for a while from the specified http://downloads.fars-robotics.net/wifi-drivers/ address. my raspberry has kernel version 5.10.17-v7 and wifi dongle has driver 8192eu. But the driver I downloaded 2 days ago did not work successfully.Wifi dongle reception has dropped and my network is slow. slowdowns in image transfer started. I think it has something to do with the recent updates. Can you please help me find previous drivers? Thanks
