VLC player - Full screen doesn't show video

Mon Jan 27, 2020 9:35 pm

I have minor problem with VLC player when it is playing a video in Raspbian. When I click on full screen the player maximises but the video does not appear. Just a black screen is displayed. The audio continues to run.

Has anyone else observed this? :D

Are you using Raspbian Buster fully updated? Which model Pi? What resolutions screen? What format and resolution of video?

I think that Raspbian is fully updated. I recently ran the "sudo apt full-upgrade". How do I check?

Its a RPi 4B. The screen resolution is 1920x1080. I don't think it is something to do with the type of video because it happens with all videos I have tried.

Hello there,

Same bug here with Raspberry Pi 4B after upgrading packages few days ago.
During the upgrade I've seen some video driver packages, so it may be due to one of those, but it is only affect when VLC is maximised to fullscreen.

Any thoughts?

It is pretty strange. Youtube videos work fine in full screen. So it only seems to be VLC player....

Same problem here on RPi 4B - 4GB.
I don't know if it's related, but similar problem have with Minecraft Pi - maximised window is black except the rectangle of original window size, but screen is sized so in full screen I see only part of the Minecraft Pi screen.

Any solution ?

I had the same issue, pressing `f` toggle `fullscreen` and I can see the video.
I can't `escape` and leave VLC, everything is black until I restart though.

Hello World, same trouble here on a Raspberry pi 4B. I'm trying to watch a 1080 movie on full screen but after a few seconds I fall stuck on a black screen. I'm using the latest release of Rasbian. Thanks for your support!

Funny thing though that the intro screens play fully functional fullscreen but the movies not... oh wait i can now play fullscreen movies in VLC even with my windows shared dvd player as well

I have it well working now

at preferences - video I use "open gl video"
"fullscreen default"
"display setting - full screen"
(so that are 3 different options)

at the codes i use
"hardware accelerated auto"

that should be working allright

This is certainly still NOT working.

Loaded 4 movies onto Pi4 and using various suggestions - most notably the latest claiming a fix - and video still blacks out entire screen at Full Screen mode.

Transferred the same movies to the Pi3 and no issues whatsoever.

Strange. At my place the black fullscreen problem occurs at the pi 4 and vlc when I run normal dvds. I did my settings tricks and all works well now without problems.

sudo apt update; sudo dist-upgrade -y will fix it.

I had this problem today with everything up to date. I switched hdmi output and fixed the issue. I switched back to the previous hdmi to double check and the black screen problem returned. It seems to work on the hdmi closest to the power conector.

Yes, HDMI-0 is the one you should be using with a single display.

As far as I know, the secondary HDMI port (port1, the right one) should never be used unless you attach two displays, but I might be wrong.

some software upgrades have been done since the release of the RPI4, and behaviour might have been updated since.

in any case, I would always start by using the LEFT (primary) HDMI-0 connector!

I have seen references to fixes, and posts suggesting that either port can be used now, but more often than not, when someone is having trouble, using HDMI-0 solves their problem.

Literally the first time I've heard this. It's always the other way around in posts I've seen (either both ports work, or HDMI-0 works, never only HDMI-1 works). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My 1080p FullHD TV works on either HDMi0 or HDMi1

VLC works AOK.

For me, switching to OpenGL mode did not work (Raspi4, 8GB, fully updated). Then, it did not even play in window mode (audio playing OK, video flickering between black and the cone).

However, switching to one of the MMAL modes helped. And now, I can switch back to Auto mode, which didn't work before trying OpenGL; but maybe switching to HDMI 0 (next to power) before between OpenGL and MMAL is the explanation for this behaviour.

I hope this helps others running into the same problem creating a more reliable description.

RPi 4 8G, Rasputin is completely up to date.
One monitor installed on HDMI-1 (closest to power input)

Same issue -- VLC works fine except that "fullscreen" mode shows blank screen (audio continues to play fine).

Solutions suggested above don't work.
Thank you for suggestions.

Same here.

The problem still persists until today even after months worth of update to Raspberry Pi OS.

Anyone found the solution yet?
Raspberry Pi OS (32-bit) with desktop and recommended software
Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 8GB at stock speed (never overclock)

Never overclock your Pi.
