Raspbian OS 64-bit beta Lite

Mon Jun 08, 2020 11:01 pm

I wanted to try out the Raspbian OS 64 bit beta image, but I wanted to try it out in Lite (no desktop) mode, but I cannot find a download for the Raspbian OS 64-bit beta in the lite format.

I don't need all the desktop bells and whistles. In fact I prefer having all 8GB (or close to it) RAM to myself to code and stuff. Is there a way to change the install over to "lite mode"?

Thanks in advance.

If you sudo apt purge x11-common then all of the GUI stuff will disappear and you'll have a "lite function alike" version.

I installed the beta Raspbian 64-bit OS on my Pi 3 model B on 20/05/2020. So far it is running fine with two webcams ( wifi Aldi, usb C615 ). The OS link is from Tom Hardware web site. "UNAME - A" shows "Linux pi64 5.4.42-v8+ #1319 SMP PREEMPT Wed May 20 14:18:56 BST 2020 aarch64 GNU/Linux". FTP / RDP / VLC / ... are OK so far. It was also running fine on the new PI 4 4Gb.
A few findings -
1/. When VLC runs ( ie play a video file ) , HTOP command shows all 4 cores are running up to 50% capacity. Hope PI will have 8 cores with higher clock frequency in the near future.
2/. Minimum 2 Gb for the new PI 4 is sufficient with my observation based my usage.

Obviously it will have a larger install base, but why not just not run X? Lets you easily stay current with updates to the beta and also not have any of the cpu overhead of running the windowing system and all that it entails.

Because X is much, much less convenient, and more or less requires having a mouse and keyboard. That's less than useful if you're trying to use it as a media playback device, which is perfectly adequately run either via HDMI CEC (under Kodi, for example), or ssh (vlc). I do the latter on my Pi, CoreELEC on my Vim.

And that's without all the tedium waiting for unused things to download and install when doing upgrades. Far better to blow it all away if you're not going to use it.
As it is apparently board policy to disallow any criticism of anything, as it appears to criticise something is to criticise all the users of that something, I will no longer be commenting in threads which are not directly relevant to my uses of the Pi.

Sounds like it is using the ARM instead of the HW decoder.

Then more compute power will not help. The cores are idle 50% of the time.

Update 64bit Raspberry pi os without desktop is running well in Pi 3A+ board. The problem was wifi. Locale setting was IN for India which was shutting down wifi. Once set for US, it is running fine. Checking further.

--old post----

I have pi OS 64 bit beta downloaded and stripped all X files following the instruction to make a lite version. This worked on a pi4. RAM required for lite version is 78K only. However, this sd card is not working on the pi3A+. not working means: all my pi works without display. Auto connects to my wifi and I access through ssh.

Is there a reason why pi3A+ should not work with present form of 64bit os (updated till yesterday)? Is this because the .dtb file specific for pi3A+ in the /boot folder is missing?

For the Pi4 I use this script and only 50MB of memory is needed for an idle system.

Code: Select all

#!/bin/dash
sudo apt update
sudo apt purge -y x11-common bluez gnome-menus gnome-icon-theme gnome-themes-standard
sudo apt purge -y hicolor-icon-theme gnome-themes-extra-data bluealsa cifs-utils
sudo apt purge -y desktop-base desktop-file-utils
sudo apt autoremove -y

Glad it helped, but there has since been a release of the Lite version, making this script redundant!
