Could not communicate with wpa_supplicant, Pi 4 SSD usb boot

Sat Jul 04, 2020 7:24 pm

Today I have succesfully managed to get my RPi4 to boot from an SSD drive. However the time is incorrect and the Wi-Fi country is not set so I cannot get online. I have tried to correct this using the menus on the desktop to no effect. So then I went to the terminal line and tried to use the raspi-config menu. This will only give me the messages "Could not communicate with wpa_supplicant" and "There was an error running option I4 Change WLAN Country". For fixing the time I get no error messages, but the time is still wrong.

Has anybody had this same problem and could you please tell me if you have found a fix?

Thanks!

Put a 'wpa_supplicant.conf' file in the boot partition:

Code: Select all

country=us
update_config=1
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant

network={
 ssid="your_wifi_SSID"
 psk="your_wifi_password"
}

The time won't become valid until you can reach the Internet.

There is already a wpa_supplicant.conf in /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

It says:

Code: Select all

Ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1
country=NL

network={
	scan_ssid=1
	ssid="MYSSID"
	psk="MYPSK"
	key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
}
As far as I understand it, creating this in the boot folder only results in this file being generated during boot, and it is already there.
Anyone any further suggestions for me?

Just for clarity, the wifi worked perfectly and the time was correct before I performed the steps to boot from ssd. But I can't think why this would matter.
(I am quite new to computing and a raspberry pi but I can learn quickly if pointed in the right direction.)

Does anyone have an idea how to help with the above problem?
It would be much appreciated!

I have no solution, but exactly the same problem. Everything is working perfectly fine with the SD-Card, but not with the SSD.

Setting the country in raspi-config did not work, adding a new wpa_supplicant.conf did not help, neither did removing the softlock manually.

And right now, after another reboot I'm facing countless EXT4-fs errors.

I suspect the USB-Sata Adapter causes the problem... Have you ever tried another SSD?

Just to observe that neither of the posters encountering issues have specified what Operating System(s) are involved.

Okay, it was actually a power issue. With a powered USB hub, it worked. But I had to rebuild the SSD.

Are you using 2.4GHz WiFi?

USB 3.0 is known to interfere with 2.4GHz wireless (not a Raspberry Pi specific problem).

Could be a power issue. What are you using for a power supply?

Could also be a problem with UAS. What does lsusb return with the SSD connected?

Which SSD and USB adapter are you using (links please)?
