Chromium v84 no audio via ALSA/Jack setup

Mon Nov 09, 2020 8:47 pm

Hi all,
I've found that since upgrading Chromium-browser to v84, Youtube videos will not play any sound.
The Raspberry Pi 4B Buster set up I have uses Jack Audio Connection Kit on top of ALSA (using .asoundrc) and worked perfectly with Chromum v78: When I started a youtube video, a Jack client/output port is launched and audio starts playing via my soundcard (Focusrite Solo on USB).

With Chromium v84, no Jack client/output port is launched at all when a youtube video is played. I have made no changes to my .asoundrc file from the working version under v78.

I ran Chromium Browser from the terminal and captured the output (see below) - it's obviously not happy with something about the ALSA / Jack set up.

Has anyone got any ideas on how to get this working? Thanks in advance for your help :)

Output from running Chromium-browser in terminal, then launching a youtube video:
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ chromium-browser

Jack is not required to reproduce this problem. I have the same trouble with ALSA alone. Same symptoms, and same messages in the terminal.

While I do not have a solution to fixing Chromium v84, I have made a script that easily downgrades chromium back to v78.
Maybe this would prove helpful in some situations. viewtopic.php?f=63&t=290329

After trawling Chromium.org bug lists, I found one that says it is fixed that sounds very similar to the problems we're having with no audio via ALSA or Jack. (https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/is ... inux&can=1 -> see comment 26)

I tried launching Chromium v84 from a terminal with:

chromium-browser --disable-features=AudioServiceOutOfProcess &

Then tried playing a youtube video. It opened a Jack client correctly and I got audio output! I guess this should work for ALSA setups too.

I don't know if running with this workaround creates any other issues - advice appreciated....

So it looks like a bug that was fixed in v79 has been re-introduced in v84???

This work around seems to work in for the standard v84 Chromium and the v84 Chromium (Media Edition) per the Ventz widevine setup (in fact running in the terminal seems to run the media edition by default and Spotify web player works).

Does anyone know how to report a bug like this to the Raspberry Pi folks?

It does indeed! Thank you! Now to (hopefully temporarily) tweak the desktop entry that I normally use to start it...

To be determined, I guess. I just now played my first YouTube video with audible sound since updating, so it'll take some time to see that everything else I need still works too.

looks to me like something you installed has changed the stalk settings.
theres no dbus or upower call when launched. those sound like gnome settings.

I get the same DBUS and UPOWER errors on the setup I have using Chromium v78 when I launch it from a terminal (just with 'chromium-browser &) but with v78 it launches Jack clients successfully, so I'm not sure there's a connection?

I get the same screenshot as you with v84 if I launch Chromium in a terminal when I already have a Chromium session running. Can you try killing all Chromium sessions and then launch again in a browser with: 'chromium-browser &' ? Would be good to see if you get any errors in this case. Thanks.

Note, I've also found that

chromium-browser --disable-features=AudioServiceSandbox &

also works to enable Chromium v84 to work with ALSA/Jack audio. Don't know if this is a better workaround than the switch I highlighted earlier.

I applied the Ventz widevine setup and there is still no audio when launching Chromium with

Code: Select all

chromium-browser --disable-features=AudioServiceSandbox
as well as the other one stated above.
Are we sure it launches Media Edition? is there a way on that command to ensure it launches Media Edition?
I installed Firefox and I do get audio when playing youtube. My Audio is coming through Bluetooth to a pair of speakers.

I'm not sure how to solve your audio problem, but just wanted to point out: Ventz's Widevine solution no longer works as of Chromium v84. If anyone wants Widevine (Netflix, Spotify, etc.), see my announcement topic about it: viewtopic.php?f=63&t=290443

I have been running Raspberry Pi systems since version 1. I have always had problems with audio support for videos from web sites like BBC News and other broadcast news sites. This is also true for the current version, 84.0.4147.141. I have never had the same problem with Firefox ESR, even though the currently available version is actually 4 major releases from the current Arch version, 82.0.3.

I have the same no sound in Chromium but from any output (DAC/HDMI/Bluetooth) can play files fine in VLC this happend after I did a fresh Pi OS install yesterday. Installed Firefox and that works fine so something has been broken in Chromium!

Today's upgrade of chromium-browser to 84.0.4147.105-rpt3 seems to now detect that BlueALSA and disable the audio sandbox automatically, so there's no need to add --disable-features=AudioServiceSandbox to the command line for launch. I haven't tested this fully though, YMMV...

Re: Chromium v84 no audio via ALSA/Jack setup

Latest chromium fixes youtube, same as sandbox workaround did.

Many other sites like radio stations are still quiet. So partial fix, no solution.

https://www.hos.com/ works. Must be a variation in how each site works. If you've found some that used to work and still don't, then I'd agree, it's only a partial solution.

Does it have something to do with live streaming perhaps? Instead of playing a prerecorded file on someone's server? I didn't think it was all that different under the hood, but maybe it is, just enough to trigger that distinction. Everything I've tried has been prerecorded, and it works. Your example is probably live streamed, and it doesn't.

I applied the Ventz widevine setup and there is still no audio when launching Chromium with
I'm not sure how to solve your audio problem, but just wanted to point out: Ventz's Widevine solution no longer works as of Chromium v84. If anyone wants Widevine (Netflix, Spotify, etc.), see my announcement topic about it: viewtopic.php?f=63&t=290443
I just followed vpetkov's instructions yesterday on my Pi400 and Netflix as well as amazon prime worked perfectly. There is no audio jack on Pi400, audio over HDMI works. It was important to close all Chromium windows, and then start Chromium media edition:

Oh yeah I forgot about that.
For any future viewers, I just want to make it clear: I was the first to figure it out. And I was the first to release a script to make it work. That was on Nov. 6. Then on Nov. 9th, vpetkov appears to have copied my work into his script and didn't even try to give me any credit. :(
