tracker-miner-fs.service

Wed Feb 24, 2021 3:22 pm

Every now and then I get this message below. What is possible to do in order to avoid receiving one.. :
localhost systemd[5542]: tracker-miner-fs.service: start operation timed out. Terminating.

I couldn't live without Tracker, and it makes me sad to see the standard answer being "delete it".

Check /tmp/tracker-extract-files.1000 for problem symlinks. Sometimes Tracker finds a file that crashes its metadata miners. Unless you move or exclude that file path, it's keep crashing and sucking up lots of CPU time. This might be a way to get around it: no progress updates from gnome tracker - Ask Ubuntu

Tracker can be quite noisy even when it's working properly, so messages in the logs may not be a terribly bad thing. 100% cpu use, though, not so good.

That might be part of the problem, because you're seeing:

Code: Select all

Feb 25 14:04:27 localhost tracker-store[299455]: Cannot initialize database: Could not open sqlite3 database:'/home/pihole/.cache/tracker/meta.db': unable to open database file
Tracker needs the ~/.cache/tracker folder to exist, so if you remove it while the miners are running, it'll be unhappy.

Let's say I would like to reinstall trackers back on my system and fix the issue trying to adjust my settings.. What would be
the correct way of doing it ?

Do You have some good link or guide how to fix this for good ?

Maybe something like:

Code: Select all

sudo apt remove --purge tracker tracker-extract tracker-miner-fs
rm -r ~/.cache/tracker
sudo apt install tracker tracker-extract tracker-miner-fs
and then never, ever delete ~/.cache/tracker while the system's running.

I'd maybe do this at the end of the day and let tracker have all night to index. It can make a computer unusable until it settles down.

Every other link I've seen is about removing it, so the only good link is the one I posted upthread.

Thank You for the the help...I followed links below:

https://gist.github.com/vancluever/d34b41eb77e6d077887c
https://www.linuxuprising.com/2019/07/h ... acker.html
https://itectec.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-track ... ot-of-cpu/
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1826439

Besides standard suggestions, I also used:
METHOD 2:
Non-Invasive Disable Cheat Sheet
This disables everything but tracker-store, which even though it has a .desktop file, seems tenacious and starts up anyway.
However, nothing gets indexed.

Code: Select all

tracker daemon -t
cd ~/.config/autostart
cp -v /etc/xdg/autostart/tracker-*.desktop ./
for FILE in tracker-*.desktop; do echo Hidden=true >> $FILE; done
rm -rf ~/.cache/tracker ~/.local/share/tracker
[/i]

Note that tracker daemon -t is for graceful termination. If you are having issues terminat-ing processes or just want to take your frustration out, tracker daemon -k immediately kills all processes. After this is done, tracker-store will still start on the next boot. However, nothing will be indexed. Your disk and CPU will be better for wear.

It works fine now and my CPU stays in normal rates without crashing...

But what's you've done is completely removed tracker. So it's no longer doing anything for you. Your files are no longer being indexed, so you can't do one-key search.
