Announcement of discontinuation on RS website

Thu Aug 11, 2022 7:14 am

The discontinuation of raspberry pi has been announced on the RS website in Japan.
According to an email sent to customers, it appears that all vendors' manufacturing licenses, including RS, were terminated on July 1 in order to review the product's manufacturing structure.
Is there an official announcement on this?

Just trying to find official words on this, as your comment is incorrect in some aspects. For the moment locking thread, will update when I have an update, and will unlock then.

Here is a response from our commercial team.

"RS Group has been an important partner for Raspberry Pi, manufacturing our products under licence since launch in February 2012. Our licence agreement with RS Group came to an end in June 2022, with the result that they no longer manufacture Raspberry Pi products. Other licensees, and our own production, are unaffected by this change. We continue to work with our reseller partners to supply Raspberry Pi products to the market, and anticipate no negative impact on availability in Japan or elsewhere."

As you can read, this only affects RS, and no other manufacturing partners, so the original post on this thread was incorrect.

Did RS indicate why they abandoned manufacturing the Pi?

I'm not sure you're ever likely to get an official answer on that one, but if I had to guess, it would be because more of the Raspberry Pi range is now manufactured by Raspberry Pi themselves, rather than through an IP licensing deal with Farnell and RS. This means RS would be getting a smaller and smaller slice of the pie.

I noticed RS announcing their own Pi competitor recently, I presume that is related to this (though I have no idea in which direction).

After some messing about on an iPad, original link (translated) has:
Q: Will RS stop selling Raspberry Pi related products in the future?
A: The sale will be terminated.

Q: I would like to introduce you to an alternative.
A: The replacement is under consideration, but there is nothing we can show you right now.

Q: Where should I place my Raspberry Pi order in the future?
A: Please contact Raspberry Pi Ltd.

Not clear from the translation what “The replacement is under consideration” means - alternative product or make their own?

Just received this email from RS this morning cancelling my order for CM4s. Thanks guys !! I will be buying from Farnell from now on.

Dear Customer,
Thank you for your order(s) of: xxxxxxxx on article 2064865.
With reference to the above order, we apologise, but we are unable to despatch this item and we have been informed by our supplier that there are supply issues with this article, which are due to current market conditions and the on-going challenges we are seeing with global supply issues.
Please accept our apologies but we will need to cancel your order on this occasion.
We are sorry, but we are unable to offer any suitable alternatives at this time. As we are sure you can appreciate, the situation is changing on a daily basis and we will update our website accordingly.

Kind Regards

Interesting, "supply issues with this article" - not we (RS) are no longer manufacturing?

Politics. Might not want to go out with "we know the entire world loves Pi, but can't have anymore of that."

From my early days in electronics, the RS catalogue was always a fantastic thing to thumb through looking for project ideas - I used to tag my order onto the company order. But they always were a commercial supplier rather an a retailer to individuals. I can imagine having to deal with enquiries about back orders is a lot of hassle and without any margin, not worth the trouble.

I won't mention the quantity of CM4s that were on back order, but I think it was well worth their trouble. Over the past 50 years I must have put at least £10m worth of business their way, starting with a few CMOS ICs for my third year project to the complete BOM for a run of several thousand telephone voice answering and recording systems a few years ago.

One per person?!! You have it better than me then. At least when it comes to picking them up at the local sellers. Microcenter is doing 1 Pi or Pico W per HOUSEHOLD.

I purchased 1 with my address, another with the wife's name but next door address with the potential excuse that were relatives who live next door, and a 3rd with a friend's card and address who we took with to pick them up. The guy at the register told us we didn't really have to do that and he would've just sold me the 3 boards as long as it was not more than 3.

Tried another 3 again a week later when they were back in stock. Showed up to pick them up only to find just 1 and a big piece of paper taped to the box with "1 PER HOUSEHOLD" in big letters written on it. The store manager finally let me buy the 3 at once because they had 25 in stock after telling him how if I showed with just one at the house my 3 kids would immediately go to battle to death for it and before an hour had gone by there'd just 1 kid limping around the house blind from one eye and missing a limb or two and no signs of a working Pico left.

And I don't think bought the entirety of my story, but there were 25 in stock and I was keeping him from closing the store and going ho!e for the night that really did it.

As for the kids, I don't have any, and no shame either :D

I am not scalping them though. I'm keeping 2 around the house that i play with, the other 4 are going to be used one in each of my bee hives.

And now you've caught me, too.

Sorry, didn't really mean to derail the thread. Carry on.

PS: Had RS catalogs make their way to me a few times in the past. A real work or art.

C'mon B.Goode, the virtually non-existing supply of Pis is sad enough, surely a few anecdotes sprinkled here and there in the middle of "another reason why you won't be getting them anytime soon" type of threads can't be all that bad if it manages to cause a smirk or two.

And totally unrelated, but genuinely curious, is B.Goode really your name or just a play on be good? I will no derail the thread any longer, sorry.
