NVME WD SN520 128GB SSD M.2 2242 - for CM4 board

Thu Nov 24, 2022 10:18 am

Hi,

I acquired couple of these SSDs for myself and I am quite satisfied with them.
They are low power so work even in first versions of Waveshare baseboard A https://www.waveshare.com/cm4-io-base-a.htm and also booting from them works fine.

Now I have an offer to get few more - would anyone here be interested in few too? like 1-5?

I could do it for EUR/US$10 a piece + $5 registered EU shipping (+possible paypal fees)

These are briefly used, pulled from devices that were upgraded to larger SSD size.
"nvme smart-log" show 4 to 8 hours of use and 10-20 power cycles so almost new.
Manufacturing date is ~ Jul 2020

Datasheet https://www.sandisk.com/content/dam/san ... asheet.pdf
They are older generation so slow for current PCs (and 'small' in capacity - 128GB and size - 2242) but this in advantage for CM4 at it has only 1x PCIe bus anyway.

There is no warranty of course but I can test them in CM4 IO board and can send you smart-log output.

You can contact me at my nick at gmail or post here so I know there is any interest. For now I got 5 spares for myself but could get ~20 more if there is an interest.

They are/where used in a lot of Dell laptops, they're the oem version of the SN550 iirc, fast enough for the v3 times and low enough power.
Even the G3/G5 gaming laptops had these.

I wish more used the nice compact size.
I'm looking for a proper 2242 compact USB case for them (not looking that hard as couldn't find any for any reasonable price)

In which country are you located (so you might be interested in Euro instead)?

I'm interested in 2 of them for testing (as my SN550 M.2 2280 will not work correctly on the Waveshare CM4-BASE-IO-A boards which I have around).

I don't care too much about EUR vs USD as I can spend both. I am in EU so EU shipping is a bit easier but can ship outside EU too (just need to fill extra CN22 form). And for package up to 50g the price difference (EU vs non EU Europe vs overseas) is negligible. More personal details via email.

You mean SN520 just 2280 size instead of 2242 does not work for you? Becasue for me it does work, I have both. I wouldn't expect any difference between SN520 2242 vs 2280. True they do have different firmware but I'd guess mostly just to keep the difference when returning data about the drive.
Actually I was using 2280 size all the time before, just got these 2242 ones few days ago.

Just to be sure I run several hours of compiling gcc from source on all CPUs with SN520 and CM4-BASE-IO-A and got zero issues. Also tried several 'dd' commands dumping whole disk in paralllel, delayed in time, so it would thrash the cache and cause 'lot of seeking'.

So getting 2242 may not make sense if SN520 2280 does not work for you. Maybe it is power supply issue or more stuff attached consuming it. I only have keyboard, mouse, one hdmi attached.

That explains it, SN520 is pcie x2 only, datasheet/brief linked above is all about IOT and low power.
SN550 is x4 and targeted for different segment.
