is there anything going on in north (western-ish) england?

Sat Jan 14, 2023 11:51 am

Prior to the pandemic there were a number of raspberry jam's in northern england but most of the the ones I can think of (Manchester, Preston, Leeds, Sheffield, Blackpool) do not seem to have restarted regular jams, if they have restarted anything at all. York do seem to have restarted something in 2022 but it seems to have fallen by the wayside again and york is rather a stretch for me.

Have I missed something or are raspberry jams or other raspberry pi events in northern england a thing of the past?

I can see here is a notice about Dundee Raspberry Pi Jam. It will take place on 24 June.

Hull PiJam (Jon Witts) that I helped at seems to have stopped since Covid. I can give him a shout, but I assume he's busy with life n stuff.

Leeds don't know, Facebook still seems to have posts to it.
York could now be under YorkSTEM and YorkRaspJam (Twitter handles) do seem to have had tweets .. Anne Carlill may know more what's happening there.

Unfortunately you can't tag people on here to give them a hint about this talk and these are eastern-ish . Ok Leeds isn't its smack in the middle :-)

Les Pounder, who can probably contacted via his role as a writer for Tom's Hardware, is from that area and might have local knowledge of maker community events.

I'm not aware of anything on the Wirral. The multiple council funded youth clubs amalgamated to one club (called The Hive, Wirral Youth Zone), I had high expectations that they would have technology sessions of one sort or another but alas it does not appear to have happened.

I'm not aware of anything in Merseyside nor Liverpool City Region but being such a large area it could have escaped me.

There were some maker clubs which appear to have come and gone, probably dependent upon grants and sometimes a corporate sponsor.

I was perhaps a little too unspectic in my original post, but I live in southern greater manchester and don't drive, so it's basically "can be reached from Stockport in a reasonable time and for a reasonable cost on a flexible off-peak ticket (I don't want to mess around with advances when i'm tired at the end of a long day). Manchester was great, Sheffield, Liverpool, Leeds Preston, Blackpool etc are ok, York, Birmingham and Carlisle would be pushing it both cost and time wise. I think Hull would be too far. London is doable time wise but way too expensive for anything other than a very special event.

Anywhere north or York/Carlisle is probablly out of the question, Dundee certainly is.

It also makes a big difference if something is actually in the City center, if it's out in a suburb I think it would have to be closer to make the overall journey time practical.

No chance getting to Hull, the trains would need to run first.

Jack Kelly (Manchester) @SecretImbecile twitter Ran that one I think, could see if Pete Lomas knows anything.
Or if Pimoroni has any contacts for the Sheffield ones.

Would be nice to see a few start up, I remember the inter PiJam quizzes :-)
