Installation on ACER Aspire ES1-332-C5KN

Wed May 31, 2023 7:12 pm

I have been trying to install the RPi Desktop for PC and Mac on an ACER Aspire ES1-332-C5KN, 4GB RAM, 32GB emmc. I know very little about Linux and I have failed. The installation completes but when I try to boot the machine I get the 'No Bootable Media' message.

I followed the instructions on the website on how to create the installation media. Initially that too failed to boot but trawlling the internet resulted in me copying 'grubx64.msi' as 'mmx64.msi' into the installation boot media /boot/EFI subdirectory. That got the installation to run and it completes without further error until reboot time.

Because I hate to be beaten I subsequently spent about 3 days trawling the net for other 'causes and solutions' but nothing has worked. I have also tried creating and booting from other 'live' linux images. All produce the same error message on failing to boot. Early on I learned that there is something odd with the emmc on this machine in that it is 'locked' to Windows. Therefore most of my efforts have been trying to get it to boot Linux from a usb flash drive. Still no luck.

A simple question - has anybody managed to get a Linux distribution working on this machine? If so please tell me how to do it.

I've got a few Pi4's running various security/home automation tasks and this ACER would be very useful for learning and developing code.

Thanks
Al

This may help getting a Linux install running https://community.acer.com/en/discussio ... on-install

Seems to need https://packages.debian.org/unstable/admin/refind so it may well run on the Pi build of Debian.

MiscBits: Thank you so much for the pointers. I’ve got it running and there are just a few things to tidy up. The magic bullet was to create a bootable refind usb stick using the image from the website. That immediately found the rasbian installed on the emmc and booted. I could leave it like this but will now try to get it to boot directly from the emmc and report back.

Thanks again.
