What is the full name of the new Raspberry Pi 5 model?

Fri Sep 29, 2023 3:33 pm

What exactly is the name of the new Raspberry Pi 5 model? I ask because, for example, Raspberry Pi 3 there are models "Raspberry Pi 3 model A+", "Raspberry Pi 3 model B". And the new Raspberry Pi 5 model what exactly is it called? On Wikipedia, at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raspberry_Pi I read that there is only one model of Raspberry Pi 5 - "Raspberry Pi 5 Model B", while in online stores this model of Raspberry Pi was labeled only as "Raspberry Pi 5" without the addition of "Model B" What kind of model is this? What is the full name of the new Raspberry Pi 5 model?

With two variants, 4GB or 8GB DRAM. That said, the Pi5 uses the "B" form factor so calling it a Pi5B is not unreasonable.

I have found it quite hard not to call it a 5B and suspect many will because "B" is the form factor, regardless of whether any other sized variant exists or doesn't. It will balance out the number of people who always referred to the Pi 4.

Ah, just calling it the Pi5 and not Pi5B dodges that annoying question, "When is the PI5A coming out?"
Have seen people demanding the Pi4A for years.
Brilliant way to misdirect attention, like saying the 2 in RP2040 means 2 cores

So could a Pi5A format be made, get rid of the Ethernet jack/chip and leave one USB3.
Not going to save much money but a 1GB or 2GB version could be useful.

Yeah I suspect this generation will be the one to drop the B suffix, given there wasn't a Pi 4A and it has been announced as Raspberry Pi 5.

First I've read so far for Pi6, congrats.

Pi4A was in the first posts of the Pi4

Pi5A will have a single USBC at new USB3 speeds. (Excl. poser one)
WiFi/BT, dual uHDMI, and open up the PCIe and the other now free lanes.
Keeping the new dual Cam setup too.
Shrunk and compact for robotics and info displays.

The Pi5π model* is a new model and scraps the hdmi and usb sockets, (excl power) to with a new to Pi compact ethernet with integrated PoE.
Making the headless users dream.
WiFi/BT not scrapped to keep a wider headless user base and allow BT keyboard mouse to still be used if really needed.

My best guess is that the feature set for the Pi6 is already decided (i.e. no point in "I want XXX on the Pi6; it's too late for that). I wouldn't be totally shocked if there are already Pi6 prototypes in the pipeline. Pi6 should be released some time in the 2026-28 time range.

Pi6 should be released some time in the 2026-28 time range.
I would suspect sooner rather than later.
By using the RP1 "south bridge" it allows for PC motherboard type option of the CPU/GPU swapping.
The pathway to future Pi's got so much simpler and cheaper.

The features of the Pi5 are now full, ie PCIe that works and has connector, 4K60 HDMI, non shared USB3.
But that's not the important thing, it is how it was implemented.
Basically 3 custom CPU/GPU, IO and Power chips, redesigning any of those is much easier to do now.
Each one has different silicon processes, tech levels and different manufacturers.

The design of the Pi5 was frozen years ago, tech has moved on quite a lot since then.
Most importantly is the direction of that tech, CV, NN, ML etc
No longer is CPU or GPU grunt seen as the path forward.
Smarter, lower power methods are being explored.

How that tech will end up in Pi6+ is speculation but we will get it sooner or later.
I am just saying sooner after seeing how the Pi5 was done.
It could be via the PCIe with working Coral, via a Sony sensor with NN on chip or Micron DRAM with AI block.
USB Coral should work full speed now?

That $45M spent is a good investment in the future of Pi SBCs.
It also throws down the challenge to other SBC makers.
Pi6, 7 could happen so much faster because RP1 exists.

Not sure what improvements could be done on the Pi5 to bring out a better Pi6.
I suspect the RP1 and Power chip will stay and BCM2712 swapped for ?
Faster Ethernet to make Jeff Geerling happy?
Faster WiFi?

Mind you, RPi Ltd don't just make SBC's, they do other stuff too :D
Expect more stuff

Er, not quite James. As per the MagPi article:
RP1 is the first silicon we designed.
RP2 (RP2040) is the second silicon we designed.
RP3 (Pi02) is the third silicon we designed.

I will just wait until it is available and see what it thinks it is called.

Code: Select all

/proc/device-tree/model
My Pi4 thinks it is a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Rev 1.1
