Using a USB microphone

Tue Aug 13, 2013 2:01 pm

I'm new to the world of Raspberry Pi, only had mine for a few weeks, bought it to save money on my Virgin Media bills.
While looking through XBMC add-ons I came across Sun-Fly Karaoke, my daughter got very excited, we already have a USB microphone but when plugged into the Pi, it doesn't work, because of this tears were a result, she is only seven.
Can anybody tell me, in simple terms how to solve this problem, do I need to buy a sound card, if I do which one?

You need drivers.
You need to get to the command line. I'm not an xbmc expert but you should be able to find out how with a quick google
boot the pie without the mic, then plug it in.
Go to the XMBC command line and type
This will show you how the mic identifies itself. You can then search for the name of the chipset and you'll probably find a tutorial in loading the drivers

You can do it now with Raspbian, although it's still a bit of a hack. However you don't need drivers (or shouldn't) and the installation process is fairly straightforward assuming your Pi has internet access.

Here's a link to a blog I wrote on the subject.
