Is it possible to remote desktop connect to pi openelec xbmc from a windows PC so that I have a windowed view of xbmc where I can control it?

OpenELEC XBMC has a built in web server.

Activate that from the menus, then point your browser at your configured RPi address/port (for example, http://192.168.0.9:8080).

You can also activate ssh and samba from the OpenELEC menus. SSH lets you logon using PuTTY (on Windows). samba lets you have access to the OpenELEC filesystem.
