Hello,
I'm trying to connect my PI5 to android devices set as access point on 5GHz bandwidth.
Unfortunately, I can't succeed : the PI never detects the AP. However, it works fine if I set the AP to 2.4GHz.
The threads I could find either on the Android side or the PI's don't match with my problem.
They either are about wifi reception on Android or wifi lags on the PI.
My case is quite different, since it is about PI not detecting android AP when set to 5GHz.
All my 3 PIs : 2 models 5 and 1 model 4.
With all my 3 Samsung android devices : TAB A8, TAB A7 and Note9.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Re: 5GHz access point Android not detected on PI5
My Pi 4 and 5 work with Samsung smartphones. I do not remember any big problems. They just detect. Except for one metal case that I used on a Pi for a while. The metal case blocked most of the WiFi signal with 5 GHz suffering the most. Samsung and the Pi OS have different terminology for security and things. Mine is working with WPA2 PSK.
Does your Samsung software offer exactly the same settings for 2.4 and 5? Are there any differences like the hidden network setting?
If not, is there a difference in the settings at the Pi end? I do not remember any in mine.
The 5 GHz range is less than 2.4 GHz but still reaches through a wall into the next room. So long as there is no metal in the wall.

Re: 5GHz access point Android not detected on PI5
Hello Peterlite,
To switch from 2.4GHz to 5GHz, on the Samsungs, I just need to select the band in the menu. Nothing more.
Security is WPA/WPA2/WPA3 Personnal on the PIs and WPA2/WPA3-Personal on android. I tried any other matching combinations with no success either.
As soon as I switch to 5GHz on android, the signal is instantly lost.
And the distance between both the devices is only 1.5 metre, with no obstacle.
I really can't understand what prevents 5GHz from working here.
One more thing : this behaves the same if I try and activate the hotspot on the PI : I can detect it from any device as long as it is set to 2.4 GHz, but as soon as I set it to 5GHz the connection is lost and impossible to establish.
Now that I think about it : I tremember there were problems last summer with PIs, where connections were lost. Maybe the bug is still not fixed ?

Re: 5GHz access point Android not detected on PI5
The same for me with my pi 4b and my Android smartphone Xiaomi.
5ghz not detected.
5ghz not detected.
Re: 5GHz access point Android not detected on PI5
OK, I finally could find something while searching for something totally different. Google is a joker.
So, it seems to be because Samsung's 5GHz frequencies don't respect the european rules.
However, the problem arose before 2020 and isn't fixed so far.
So, is there a way to tweak the wifi from the PI's side in order to work around this ?

If you find the country code for the phone, you can break the law and set the country code wrong in the PI.
There are ways to report frequencies in use then override frequency bands without changing the country code. I only know what applies in the West island of New Zealand. (The land around Bondi Beach.)
