No idea what to use for VNC password (and username for that matter). I have VNC installed and enabled. When I enter the Pi IP on my windows machine I get prompted to enter username and password. It is accepting nothing that I can think of. I have not done anything with passwords etc on the Pi. I am assuming username is Pi and password is Raspberry because I have not changed it but clearly that is not the combination that it's looking for. I have no other machines being networked via VNC right now. When I type the command vncpasswd I just get a bunch of modes and options which I have no clue on. I tried "Password" since it referred to that as default but that didn't work either
Thanks
Dave

Re: VNC password
It would be whatever username and password you use in Raspbian (assuming that is the OS you are connecting to). Default is pi:raspberry, but you should have changed the password when the system was first booted, so use your Raspbian password.
For example, if I was using the default pi user and changed the password to 12345 during Raspbian setup, I would put pi into the VNC username field and 12345 in the password field.

The default user is pi and the default password is raspberry NOT Pi and Raspberry

Re: VNC password
Ok sorry. Typo on my part. I tried both upper and lower case anyway. I figured out a way. Opened VNC server app and went to options > security and changed the authentication drop down from "Unix" to "VNC". When I did that it asked me to enter a new password which I did. Then it worked fine.

Re: VNC password
If your Raspberry Pi was connected to the internet with the default password, then it has likely been hacked, and you should start over with a freshly imaged SD card (and also check anything else on the same network for security breaches, as other systems may have been compromised).

Re: VNC password
Ok got it. Thank you!
Re: VNC password
I prefer to set a VNC password and have VNC demand that rather than using the Linux authentication.
Re: VNC password
Yes thanks. that's exactly what I did. Except after I entered the new password I got a pop-up message suggesting I set encryption to "always on" due to the length of the password? Wasn't sure on that setting

Re: VNC password
As long as you're using it on your home network I don't think you need encryption on. I've been using my Pis for over 3 years now through VNC with no issues. Just make sure you set the password to use the VNC password and not the UNIX one. And you can just check the Pi's IP in the main VNC window, just open up VNC Viewer on another device on the same network and enter the IP shown in the VNC Server's main window.
Re: VNC password
Ok great. Thanks! Good to go now. Started over. Reimaged the SD card, reinstalled everything , new pi password and VNC working fine

Re: VNC password
If opening up to the world a non-obvious user name, strong password and encryption are pretty much required as folks scanning will see it and try to get control.
For local, only on your network you can get really lax, I have one Pi that runs my sound system that has no password, just click an icon on your PC and the VNC window pops up.
